I really don't mind the increase given the explanatory email that came around earlier (pasted below for anyone who's not seen it). In my area, one U14s/15s game would have offset the total registration cost, so it really isn't an issue for me given the additional CPD that we'll hopefully see.
As we look ahead to the 2026/27 season, we want to share an important update about referee registration, including a change to the annual fee, which will enable us to better support you in your role.
Why this change is being made
Over the past year, we’ve listened closely to referees and those who support referee development across the country. What you’ve told us is clear:
• More referees than ever are looking to progress to higher levels in the game
• 57% of referees are under 25 and want development that is easily accessible
• Your experience as a referee can vary significantly depending on where you officiate
• Many referees would like to see improved learning and development opportunities
We know this can impact your confidence, progression and enjoyment of the game.
What we’re doing about it
In response to this feedback, we are introducing a new Referee Curriculum, a major step towards creating a more consistent and supportive experience for every referee. From the 2026/27 season, this will mean:
• A clearer, more structured development journey for referees
• Consistent learning content, wherever you are in the country
• Better alignment between The FA and County FAs, so that the support provided to you feels joined up
• Access for every referee to new online learning content
We are introducing these steps to make sure every referee has access to the same quality of development and opportunity, helping to enhance the matchday experience.
Supporting this investment
To support this, the referee registration fee will increase to £30 from the 2026/27 season, with the £10 increase ringfenced for grassroots referee development.
We recognise that any increase to fees matters, especially at grassroots level.
As there has not been an increase in the referee’s registration fee for more than 20 years, we have worked hard to ensure that this change delivers meaningful impact for referees across the game. We are committed to making sure this investment directly improves your experience as a referee and helps us continue building a curriculum that is accessible, relevant and valuable to the grassroots game.
Supporting this investment
As part of your registration, you will benefit from:
• Access to the new National Referee Curriculum
• More consistent and accessible learning opportunities
• Improved delivery of training and development
• Access to The England Football Family, giving you access to exciting rewards, exclusive England ticket offers and money-can't-buy experiences
Looking ahead
This change is about building a refereeing experience that is consistent, supportive, and fit for the future so that your matchday experience is as positive as possible.
Thank you for your continued commitment to refereeing.
