The Ref Stop
Move this to the other thread so using this right now? As @massref posted in the other thread, there are two radically different ways to look at this. Do we really want a PK here where the GK thinks he took the GK and the defender thought the GK was giving him the ball to take the GK? As I’ve posted before, I’d like to see a Law change to require a GK to leave the GA to reduce the likelihood of these incidents.

EDIT: whoops. The discussion on this was on another forum.

Not giving a penalty here rewards a massive brain fart by the Chelsea players and robs Burnley of a chance at scoring, Where's the fairness in that?

Tough sh*t. Pen.

Could say there is an opposition player on the PA line so in the box when Goal kick is actually taken? So is it a case of punishing the more serious offence?

You’re not rewarding a brain fart, you’re forgiving a brain fart.
I think if every football fan was given the choice of their team gaining a penalty in this way, but then another time conceding a penalty in this way, or neither being given a penalty, the majority would vote that they didn’t want it to be a penalty.

Nah not for me. Pen all day

Under the laws I can't see anything other than a penalty here. The GK was clearly legally taken by Sanchez and Chalobah then handles it, but equally I think the "what football expects" criteria to argue against a penalty has some legs. There's no complaint from Burnley, I'm pretty sure the two attackers are complaining about time wasting rather than a handball offence. Really difficult situation for the match officials, if they give it they are accused of being jobsworths who don't understand the game, but given how little controversy there has been about this I suspect there would have been far more furore had they given a penalty.

I think unlike the Brugge game where Mings was clearly out of the 6 yard box and handled it, I don't think you can say for 100% certainty the goalkeeper kicked it to the defender as a normal goal kick.

I think whenever this happens and the defender is out of the 6 yard box and picks the ball up, then a penalty should be given but if not then the benefit of the doubt should apply.
