The Ref Stop

My First Match day coach

So I have my first match day coach/observer tomorrow. I am slightly nervous, but the gentleman who is doing in has been very nice and helpful.

Anything I should look out for to make sure I perform correctly? I'd like to to think I do things right every match!

Don't referee any different to how you would normally.
There's no point in a MDC giving you feedback on a performance that isn't your own. Don't do things just because you think it will please them, as you never know what individual MDCs like to see in terms of approach.
Apply law, because you can never be criticised for doing so.

And... enjoy!

Sound advice. I'm not looking at this as find faults, but more of a learning experience. I've made the decision that I want to become a better referee and go up through the levels. My ultimate aim is to reach level 3 and do the national league, but I am 49 and that might be out of reach. Maybe as an assistant?

However that is far away as I hope to reach level 6 this quarter and maybe even go for level 5 this year. Lets see!

I've had two MDC visits and two "informal ones" when middling with higher-level, far more experienced referees as ARs, and they've been brilliant - feedback and development points were incredibly valuable. They were all minor, but have made a big difference to my refereeing - things like not putting hands on waist, positioning after a goal is scored etc.

As @RefereeX says, just referee it as you usually do. The only difference to your usual routine and style is to arrange to meet your MDC in good time before KO, debrief at half-time and another at full-time.

Good luck, enjoy and look forward to your report of how it went!

Read the MDC Form before the game.
There are quite a few boxes you can tick by being dilligent before a ball is even kicked. ;)👍

So long as your club and MDC marks are good enough & then Observer marks from L4 there is no reason why you cannot get at least to L3 and perhaps higher. As to AR, I am aware of someone who is in his 50’s and recently promoted to PGMOL.

So I had my match day coach today. I have to say that I found the experience so valuable.
Actually having someone who helps you improve. Yes he pointed out some faults in my game, but that’s the only way to improve. I know what I need to work on, but the overall feedback was positive.
Tips on positioning I will 100% implement.

I look forward to seeing the report.

That’s great to hear. I guarantee you’ll feel more confident, and be a better referee, going forward.
