Level 7 Referee
Hi, first time post here although I've been reading for a couple of months and hoovering up as many tips as I can.
Newly qualified and did my very first game as AR today.
My question is it okay to call "no offside" when the defender appeals. I did and replied "no, you dropped back and played him on number 6". Is this the correct thing to do or better to just keep quiet?

That’s a great explanation. It’s always good if you can identify the number of the player in an offside position / the second-last defender. If you can’t get the number, you can resort to the position; “Your right-back kept them on.”

In offside situations, you can feel pretty safe explaining your decision as the referee is unlikely to overrule you. You do need to be more careful with other calls though, especially fouls. In such cases, just make sure (with eye contact, body language etc) that the referee agrees with you before you try and sell your decision.

Had the weirdest reaction when saying that exact thing once from a fan this season. Got the shout of "You can't be coaching their back line Lino" but I think no harm ever comes from it and gives you a bit more rapport with the shouty centre backs.

If I'm fortunate enough to get a glimpse of the defender's number then I'll communicate that but more often I'm not able to. If asked, I'll just shout "red/blue/white shirt - far side/middle" whatever.

In my own experience, the one asking doesn't really want to know the answer - they just want to try and undermine your decision.

I agree this is usually true. But I think it is also sometimes an honest Q by a defender who thought he did his job to make the OS line. In my mind, it is best to treat as an honest Q even when it might not be—which it sounds like you do as well.

If you have team sheets try to work out the left back’s name. They’ll usually be the one asking / easiest one to explain to
