It was only clear to me after watching the video a couple of times, that it was thrown from the crowd. However from the referee's viewpoint it may well have seemed to come from the technical area. So if the referee decided that was where it came from and that it was either thrown by the manager or an unidentified occupant of the technical area then a red card for the manager would be correct (even though, in this instance, mistaken).Bit baffled by that one, the ball was clearly thrown back on by someone in the crowd. Perhaps the coach shown the red card said something?
The post says it was the assistant manager sent off so it is unlikely to be an 'unidentified occupant' unless the manager was not in the technical area for some reason. It was only clear to me after watching the video a couple of times, that it was thrown from the crowd. This was my first thought too. It’s quite unfortunate timing but the coach raises his arm to point at something just as the ball comes over his shoulder on to the pitch. Can see why that may have appeared to the referee that the coach threw the ball on.
I know the referee, but haven’t asked him. But a mutual friend said he had spoke about it and just said he mistook the arm movement I mentioned above and the ball coming and thought it was the AM throwing a ball on to delay the restart.Does anyone have information on this one? I’m really intrigued as to whether something had gone on beforehand for the referee to act how he did

At senior levels and with neutral ARs you aren't always watching where the ball goes once it is out of play, there are far more important things to be watching. In this clip you can see the referee is rightly focusing on where the foul was and making sure there is no reaction. That may be the case...
It can happen.
Id be asking myself "where did the original ball go?"..
In this case, it clearly went into the crowd. So surely, by that working out, unless youre 100% certain the AM done it and you saw him do it, you have to take caution that the ball has been returned from where it ended up - the crowd.
I appreciate that. I've been at that kind of level. But with 4 officials, an assistant and 4th on that side, and between the 3 of you, you cant tell who threw that ball in for sure, something has gone wrong. And surely 1 of those 3 (even the assistant far side) can see its gone in to the crowd. At senior levels and with neutral ARs you aren't always watching where the ball goes once it is out of play, there are far more important things to be watching. In any case there's a 4th official with comms, so I'd be pretty sure the instruction for the red card came from him. Which was wrong obviously.
I don’t know the facts, but imagine if for example the ball left the stadium… (or over the back of the stand)I appreciate that. I've been at that kind of level. Its a mistake, absolutely no doubt about that. The 4th official looks distracted, he realised the ball went out of the ground to went to get another one. He then disappears out of shot as the ball was thrown back over the stand, I would guess he was getting another ball out of the bag ready, and there's no way he has seen where the ball came from. AR1 hasn't good eyes in the back of his head so no way he saw it, and a bit of a push to think AR2 is watching that. I think the referee has just seen an illusion and none of the other three saw what happened to be able to bail him out.I appreciate that. I've been at that kind of level.
