Caveat as usual that I'm a Brighton fan, hence the late post as I wanted to take a day to make sure I wasn't reacting emotionally.

Two incidents in this game have me questioning things:

Firstly, Tonali on Matt O'Riley... The angle of this video isn't ideal but Tonali just kicks through the leg of O'Riley, I feel I see this given all the time usually...

And then the penalty that stuck for Newcastle, at 2:05

How is that awarded after Wilson gets a free header at goal from 6 yards out? Is that not a case of advantage played? Newcastle essentially given two chances to score, which I understood as generally the opposite principle applied that if we allow an advantage we do not give the penalty. You cannot say that header was a worse chance than the freekick or even a penalty surely?

First one. Not a penalty for me.

Tonali was absolutely focused on getting the ball. O'Riley was also trying to get the ball, but his intent was to get in the way of Tonali to block him as part of it. That is totally legitimate, but if 'normal contact' results then I'm happy no foul has been committed. O'Riley is instigating contact there.

If we start to give those then we will just have players stepping in front of the opposition and getting a foul as their reward.

I think I can see the argument that he's not across the ball enough to be shielding it, he's stuck the leg in but not his body

Second one. I think he whistles before or at the same time as the header. For me he has already decided it's a penalty and it is merely a timing issue between the offence, the action of blowing the whistle and the header.

Blue tinted glasses I think @OnlyUseMeWhistle 😉

Re the penalty that actually stuck, watching on MOTD I’m pretty sure the referee blew immediately and before the header/save. I remember thinking he got lucky that the keeper saved the header otherwise there’d have been chaos.

Ah I'll use my hearing loss as an excuse!

Always appreciate this forum for lifting them for me ;P

100%. Paused the clip fractionally after the whistle has gone and keeper not made the save yet.

I think this game highlights perfectly why we do need VAR in the game because without it, there would of been two major mistakes by the referee and yet, VAR barely gets a mentioned by pundits as being a positive in this game.

Good too see the dive punished by a yellow card after the review also, mad to think this is the only second time this has happened since VAR has came in but another positive aspect of VAR which gets forgotten about is dives in the penalty area have become quite rare now albeit players deliberately instigating contact I feel needs stamping down on more.

I think we should also be clear that although they would have been major mistakes, both were from no fault of the Referee from use of his human eyes. I suspect 99% of all PL Referees would have made the the same initial decisions.

I agree on the penalty initially given for the dive by Willock, that really isn't easy to see real time. But for the one given for the challenge on Gordon, I'm surprised he got that wrong given his position, he was level with the edge of the penalty area and couldn't really have had a better position, so I'm pretty sure he will be very disappointed at getting that one wrong.

I actually thought the Willock decision was a really poor one. There's an angle that pretty much shows Pawsons view, and I think he'll be disappointed with it. Add to the fact that he took so long to give it

Yes of course but you know in the eyes of supporters and the media, they would be hammering him and he is of course a very experienced referee but as I say, this is why we have VAR and it should never get scrapped in my view.

I'll reserve my criticism for Newcastle's attempted cheating (x2) rather than blame the referee in this case.

I think it’s harsh to tarnish the entire club - it’s more a certain few individuals, though I think the Manager has to have words with those players, but only 1 in this particular game.
