A&H

It was nice while it lasted...

I wonder how many refs might sack it off as well. We'll have had almost 18 months of highly disrupted football by the lltime we get to the start of next season and I suspect that for quite a few they'll have found that Saturday afternoons not revolving around football is quite acceptable.

Equally there will be a lot that are climbing the walls desperate to get back.

But how do you fairly decide who to promote?!
There's no right answer and none that'll be fair to everyone. But if promotions are to happen (and they probably will need to) it'll be interesting to see how they do it.

I just had a an actual match. "Elite sport" here is allowed in Helsinki, so the mens and womens premier futsal leagues carry on - in venues that are closed the rest of the time. I just had womens prem futsal. Masks on until entering the field. First game since November. Probaby the only one for a while as there aren't many matches to go around. I even gave a yellow card (for what would have been a DOGSO red last season).

We are only on 2-400 cases a day in Finland. Up to secondary schools still i the flesh but all hobbies and council location closed here. Feel fortunate on one hand - only 17 cases of the "English variant" detected - but also fully expect everything to stay closed for months. Vaccination roll out not so fast here.

Talks of further restrictions incoming early next week due to the worsening situation in the NHS hospitals. Elite sports rumoured to be postponed too. Its very difficult to see a resumption of the season now.

Given where are I would expect that Step 3 to 6 to be null and void in the next couple of weeks.

Grassroots may survive a bit longer before closure.

Personally, I’d like to see Step 3 to 6 have their season extended to April 30th 2022.

My view is that this virus will still be prevalent next winter (either as a pandemic or reclassified epidemic) and the chances of completing in full next season would be in doubt.
Registrations and affiliations would remain in place for the extension although transfer protocols are still available for player changes.

I also think that would be a solution for refereeing merit tables, too.

It's a good idea, and one that should be explored.
How would you cover any losses in refs dropping off the list and not returning to complete the season?

In my pool, a few referees dropping might be welcomed!
It’s a contentious view but with such a shortened season, I don’t believe the L5-4 promotion candidates will have accrued the necessary experience for L4, specially if they are in their first promotion attempt. I thought I was ready for my first L4 season but it turned out I needed a bit of work to get to the required standard.
Those who are ready will already be known and the FA should promote where appropriate. These candidates are the exception to the rule IMO.

Definitely! Fewer L4 refs much appreciated*

*based on first 4 months of the season!

With an average mark of 70 required using old criteria do they care about the standard? A referee was promoted carrying a 61.

They'll be a number of teams who fold whatever system they use, reducing game availability even more.
Last season they choose not fill vacancies, do that again and you'll end up with some 14 etam supply leagues.

How have we ended up over subscribed on the L4 list. Its the same here in the South West Pool. You're Yorkshire ish way, dunno about yampy but I think someone else, a bit further this way, also having free Saturdays too.
Is this a symptom of the league restructure being delayed?

Yeah we're in the same pool, yorkshire/north east counties region.

The delay on restructure is definitely part of it, less games to line (I've done 2 all seasln) as well as appx 95% availability amongst refs. There's 108 on the pool for less than a 900 games so we won't, on average, get 10 games in over a full season!

Thought it was bad here. Do you o ly. Have one league? Are you waiting for another league to be formed?
We have 2280 games, not incl. Cup games (that's 3 leagues of 20) so I think the math is right. We have around 90 refs on the pool for 30 games on a Saturday. Especially in West Cornwall there are only about 7 or 8 step 3 and 4 clubs that are reasonably accessible, with two of those with realisable national league aspirations so was having at least one or two free Saturdays this season.. A change from having none.
Until the restructure we were a pool of about 40 I think which meant that some step 6 games were being covered by experienced l5 and promotion candidates. We now have refs from as far as Dorset in our pool I believe.

You fellas are not exactly selling Level 4 to me!

As a first year level 4 it's been a big change this season.

We've gone from having too few L4's to too many. There are 57 referees on our marking leagues (which are 2 divisions of 20 teams). The appointments secretary spreads games round as best he can and of course there are other competitions and normally contrib lines as well.

However pretty much all refs I know at this level have had regular free Saturdays (even before football was impacted again with Tiers and lockdowns) and we've all been looking to pick up games at Step 7 and below to fill those spare Saturdays.

It's been far from ideal and it's really been the first time since I was a relative new L7 where I've been chasing games week to week.

Obviously the impact of the league restructuring not happening, bad weather in October time and I lost a couple of games to injury have all taken their toll, but even allowing for Covid disruption, it's been very different to what I expected.

On the plus side, the games I've had have been enjoyable and it has been a good learning curve, which I believe is helping my overall development.

Knowing what I know now, would I still go for L4? Yep absolutely!

Step 7 you lucky lad 😂 Our local. Games are appointed ahead of supply league so they are all filled.. Only get those if someone comes off a game. Eg I got one as the ref got put on a. Vase game.
I've been doing proper grassroots stuff.. Real local village football.. I won't lie, I enjoyed it. 22 lads, not the highest skill level just wanting to play football. It was quite enjoyable.

We have 3 leagues (one at step 7, 6 and 5). The step 7 only has 15 teams I think. The numbers were quoted by our appointments officer at the start of the season so have just assumed they're right! A 20 team league has only 380 games a season though.

Yeh, my. Maths was well off. 🤣🤣
I'm. Not even sure how I arrived at that number. Think I did 20 teams x 38 games. But of course 2 team participates in each game so I needed to divide the total by 2.
