The comment was meant to have been something like I’m not the reason you’re in the relegation zone - you are.

He may have said those comments after being hounded all game as I suspect he wouldn’t have made those comments for no reason.

Wher have you seen that? I have seen articles to say no action but nothing to say the comments were justified?

Yes but the referees are asked to manage players and if they end up captioning say three players for dissent in a game they get accused of poor player management and looked down upon but both league and clubs, especially at that level. You can't have it both ways.
For me, good on him.

Good on him for antagonising players further when dissent is already a problem, hence the need for sin bins further down the ladder. And as a role model to younger referees, what example does that set? Go and make comments like this to Sunday league footballers and see what happens. There’s no positive in him making the comments bar the fact it’s slightly amusing

Sin Bins won't make it into the pro game because the sponsors need the Fancy Dans on the pitch

Are you basing that on what the player claimed he said (and which totally mischaracterized his remarks) or what the review of the audio proved he actually said? Based on the reports that the players were whining and moaning at him the entire game when decisions didn't go their way and then came out with the famous line that it was the fault of bad refereeing in all their games that they're where they are, I don't think his actual remarks were all that far out of line.

I’m basing it on the articles posted within this thread, I’ve no looked into it further as I saw it was dropped but I’m actually talking about the bigger picture and refereeing as a whole. We have tools at are disposal to deal with dissent, in what way does making comments about players or their team help? It’s only going to antagonise them further

At grassroots I agree. But further up the pyramid, for right or wrong, there is a greater expectation on "Event Management." Once you get to supply league and above, people are paying to come and watch a game of football and in many cases the players are also being paid as well therefore the teaching to referees changes somewhat.

In my years of Refereeing, I've been fortunate to attend many RA and CFA events with different speakers from the top of the pyramid down. The question that always get asked is "You guys make our job harder by not clamping down on dissent and OFFINABUS, why don't you?" And the answer is always the same which is "Because it's made clear to us that the attraction of football is in the players, not the referees, therefore cheap cards for this is not something the league or clubs want to see, especially if it means a star player getting a ban"

A ref in the Premier League that treats dissent in the same way we would at grassroots is one that would soon find themselves not being appointed to those games.

Whether we agree or disagree with it, that's the way it is, for those who go up the pyramid as Referees they either need to adapt or stagnate in their approach, for those who won't ascend then just use the tools at your disposal.

that’s fine, Ill accept that. But is making comments back at players good or encouraged ‘event management?’ Maybe it happens a lot and I’m just not aware, but I don’t see how in any circumstance this helps a situation.

If you discount the potential use of card, then the two options are

1) stand there and take it and say nothing back
2) potentially give a bit back to them

Either way, it's a hiding to nothing.

Likely Moss momentarily got fed up. He's probably rueful the players dragged him down to their level. It happens. Sounds like no case to answer.
Sounds like Gosling needs to grow up

There is a very simple answer / response here. The next time Dan Gosling shows any kind of dissent, don't talk to him just shove a yellow card at him, and when he inevitably does it again show him another one.

I've been on the wrong side of this before, where a player has had a moan at me, I've made a sarky and put down comment back, player has complained to his manager and I've been reported. If you can't take it back don't dish it out.

Same here. It's funny that when I stopped trying to meet fire with fire and just started throwing cards at people for their snide remarks, my games suddenly got a lot easier to manage.
 
The players used to see my posh 4 x 4 car pulling up and a few players would joke that how come a parks ref could afford such nice wheels!!!! I'd explain that the FA gave a cash bonus at the end of the season on the ref with the most cards and i'd won it a few years running so i bought it cash..... Some of the mugs thought I was actually serious LOFL!!!

Yes, but the thing is that there's no evidence (that I've seen) that he made any comments about players and it seems he really only made indirect comments about the team. According to the reports referencing what the review of the audio showed, after "a very challenging game," (apparently full of whining and moaning) when Gosling at one point later in the game moaned Bournemouth were only in relegation trouble because of bad refereeing decisions, Moss replied that it wasn't his (and presumably, by extension other referees') fault that they were where they were.

To me, his remarks were more in the nature of a defence of himself and all his refereeing colleagues, than they were a direct comment about the team, albeit in a slightly sarcastic manner.
