Leeds v Derby

The Referee Store
Fantastic game on so many different levels. Edge of your seat drama as soon as Derby got the tie back to 1-2.

@alexv will be along shortly once he has finished editing his video to show how it was all the refs fault.

Red was always coming but that could have been avoided with a safe foul early on. There were at least 3 opportunities and it was clear the challenges were getting stronger. It was building up and there were a couple of opportunities to stop the game. Then it doesnt happen.

Am absolutely heartbroken but I thought Anthony Taylor had an outstanding game let it flow and only intervened when needed. Shame we can’t have refs like this every week.

Agreed. AT has got a lot of stick on this forum in the past but he showed here that he’s still a top referee. Could have easily caused chaos and lost control of this game but he was near faultless.

Out of the two second-leg games, I thought Taylor was definitely better than Kavanagh. It's not that I thought Kavanagh did a bad job yesterday, but I did think he was a bit too lenient and had to work hard to reel the game back in. I thought Taylor was great from the outset and really set a good tone for what was allowed and what wasn't. Both send-offs were absolutely warranted. There have been some EPL games this season where I thought Taylor wasn't that great, but he was terrific tonight.

That being said, if that was one of Kavanagh's first big-time tests, he's got a bright future. Last night was a pressure-cooker, and he handled it pretty well and got the big calls right save for maybe one. If that's his outcome for his first game in that type of environment, he'll be a good one for the big games in the future.

Taylor was excellent, I was particularly pleased with the dissent caution in the first half for Lawrence.
Almost unheard of at this level. Then backed it up with a booking to the assistant manager going off at the AR. Two things we need more of at the top level

What a game that was, shows why the Championship is regarded as one of the best leagues in the world, and certainly the best second tier league.

Anthony Taylor was excellent, that was a tricky game to referee and he absolutely nailed it.

One thing I’ve always said to friends, (and not because I’m a Boro fan) is that I prefer watching championship football than premier league. 9 times out of 10 it’s more of a contest, it’s quicker, it’s more physical and there’s less prima donnas.

When have I ever said it was all the ref’s fault? I try to support them in every game and you’ve never seen me say ‘we lost because of the ref’

Well, without Bamford there is less prima donnas.

So depressing but I’ve never blamed losing on a ref and never will. Enjoyed the yellow for dissent today

The caution for the dive in the first half was impressive. That was a fantastic spot.

Loved the second caution in the last minute, if you watch the highlights on Sky Sports, the defender nods in agreement with the decision only to argue "I got the ball!" when the caution came out! Brilliant.

Did you not blame the ref in the Brentford game for costing you automatic?

Before I start, I don’t wanna hear it... We don’t deserve to go up after that and Blades and Norwich do. Anyway...

Nice to see a touch of class from a manager when the referee makes a game/season defining error. Bielsa said that he doesn’t like making comments on the referee as ‘they have a hard job’ and they are ‘allowed to make mistakes’. Makes such a good change to see a manager on the receiving end of a poor call speak highly and respectfully of referees, unlike a certain manager in the Prem. I’ll try to find the interview but I’ll post the mistake here; not sure how he missed it as he’s perfectly positioned. Well spotted on Watkins’ simulation though

Now you can argue that Bielsa is "praising" the ref following an error, but the error is still your opinion and thus blaming him for costing you potential promotion as a pen and possible goal would have changed the game entirely.

Just pointing out.

As an American soccer fan, I would have no issues whatsoever seeing a fair number of young American players getting opportunities in the Championship. We're seeing some of our bright young talents like Pulisic, Tyler Adams, and Josh Sargent playing in the Bundesliga, but I've really enjoyed the Championship matches I've watched this season and hope the US gets some more players who are good enough to get playing time in the Championship.

Lighten up Alex. I am teasing.

But jokes aside it was a thread a week on refereeing errors in Leeds games at one point.
