Turkish competition is now two weeks on it’s way. Before the season all referees came together for a seminar with Uefa’s instructors. I spoke with Ahmet Çağatay Gür, a talented regional assistant referee and sales manager from Ankara about refereeing in Turkey, the country ‘where everybody is a referee’. A short introduction in photo series. Or text: “When I was a young, I was a footballer, I played for the best club in Turkey and also my father was a Super League footballer, for clubs such as Gençlerbirliği, Kayseri Spor, Hacettepe, Beşiktaş. I mean that my family comes from the football. But after my education life I have started refereeing.” Photo of Uilenberg at Turkish referee seminar. Photo by TFF and via interviewed referee...
‘Referees in the media’ will be published at the beginning of the week on the Dutch Referee Blog and provides remarkable or interesting quotes and links to articles worth reading. “Back to Aberdeen to unpack etc and get ready for my game tomorrow in Peterhead, fingers crossed my luggage arrives in one piece in Aberdeen!” Morag Pirie, Scottish female referee, just came back from a mini-tournament for women’s Champions League, and has a game the next day. Good diary (also about the things referees do beside officiating) about her seven days in Slovakia. “We noticed Abirami’s potential to develop further when she attended the AFC Project Future training and we once again thank FIFA for the continuing trust they have in Asian referees by...
I was on the radio to talk about refereeing in The Netherlands. Got in touch with Bill Eaton, Referee Secretary of Bolton Bury & District Football League, via Twitter. He’s also a sports show presenter on 96.5 Bolton FM and asked me if I could tell something about refereeing in The Netherlands. Logo 96.5 Bolton FM After last weekend’s hot (just the weather) match I called the show. Here’s te audio file. You can hear me after 18 minutes. Or download the mp3 via the website of the radio (direct link, 54 MB). I’ll try to create a audio player with just me. Continue reading...
When I got this fixture I was very chuffed and excited. My 1st game in the Kent Invicta League is a premier league game - wow!! The week building up to game I was trying to fit in as many ways to keep fit as possible. I've done a few 12min sprints ready for the fitness test I plan on taking next summer. Not quite hit the 2.5k, the closest I got was 30metres short. I have no doubt I will be able to do it with no problems by the summer. On Tuesday I went back to British Military Fitness after having about a month off due to work commitments and the Olympics. I throw myself into the deep end and do a double session of circuits, well that was very hard. Unfortunately picked a few sore back and the inside of my left leg was hurting for a...
This video is on the Official MLS Youtube channel and is a round up of various incidents that took place in the latest round of games. A few thoughts, its great that they produce such a video but does it under mine the officials, can you inaging the FA Producing such a video? Second Pete Walton has a lot of work to do! Football referees on national top level will all appear in their new outfit the next weeks. Brands made all some new referee kits for the 2012/2013 season. The Scottish referees will use the Adidas Euro 2012 referee kits, like the German Schiedsrichter. German referees posed with the traditional black kit, but I kind of like the yellow and silver ones from the Scottish FA, sponsored by Specsavers. ‘Referees in the media’ will be published at the beginning of the week on the Dutch Referee Blog and provides remarkable or interesting quotes and links to articles worth reading. “I don’t know what came over me. It was silly. It was 100% stupid. It was ridiculous. I’m still embarrassed by it. I’ve never doing anything like that before. I’ll have to take my punishment.” Newcastle coash Alan Pardew after he pushed assistant referee Peter Kirkup. “If I see you after, I kill you.” The death threat of Adis Jahovic in the Swiss league. He got a ban of ten matches. Last week I published about referee abuse in The Netherlands and harder punishments. What do you think about a ten match ban for a death threat? John Cooper, secretary of the...
Tim Cahill scored his first goal for New York Red Bulls after his move from Everton this summer. Unfortunately it was somewhat controversial. Watch the video and see if you can spot the issue that the commentators couldn’t figure out. Tip you will need sound! Yep that’s right the Referee blows for a penalty and runs towards the spot before Cahills shot on target. At that momment the game is dead, instead the Referee tries to give the advantage to New York. I understand what he is doing but there are two bits where he fails, one he has stopped play, but also if he is going to play the advantage then he needs to signal this. During Saturdays West Ham vs Aston Villa match Kevin Nolan scored the hammers first goal back in the Premier League. However initally it looked like it was going to be rulled out as the assistant signaled for an offside. However Mike Dean spotted the flick on by the Villa defender which allowed the West Ham player not to be offside. Remeber it is not an offence to be in an offside position alone. The Dutch FA has tried to diminish excessiveness on pitches in amateur football by punishing harder. Totally 200 people got banned for 2-10 years, 105 teams were ruled out of their competition and 74 persons may never play football anymore. That only happened five times in total in the seasons before, stated the FA. Secretary of Health & Sport Edith Schippers. Press photo provided by Rijksoverheid.nl The number of rough incidents (f.e. beating up a referee or kicking a player who’s lying on the ground) has decreased from 30 each weekend to 25, after years of increase. “It goes the right way again”, says Secertary of Health & Sports Edith Schippers, who started a campaign for a safer sports climate last year. “But we are not there yet.”...
This incident took place in the league cup this week. It’s an interesting one with the assistant signalling for offside the ball goes back to the goalkeeper who when challenged head buts his opponent. The referee sends him him off after consultation with his assistant. A few thoughts on the incident struck me straight away. If the player is offside has the referee blown straight away and the ball has gone back to the keeper to be setup for the offside, and if so technically the ball is out of ay and restart is the offside. Has he played advantage given the space the keeper has to keep the game moving, and but is there an advantage when the ball is back there? Note -Post edited as for some reason the video did not upload when I posted...

Football referees on national top level will all appear in their new outfit the next weeks. Brands made all some new referee kits for the 2012/2013 season. Earlier this week Expedia announced a new deal as sponsor for several UK soccer competitions. “We’re proud to be the new sponsors of match officials”, said Andrew Warner, senior marketing director of Expedia EMEA, to sportspromedia.com. “As the world’s largest online travel agent it seemed logical to associate with a sport that has a truly global audience.” Referees will use the Umbro Diamond kit. ‘Referees in the media’ will be published at the beginning of the week on the Dutch Referee Blog and provides remarkable or interesting quotes and links to articles worth reading. “I very seldom have trouble. I find it is all about being able to respect players but operate control, instead of diving into your pockets for yellow and red cards. It is quite simple, really.” John Leeman (79), honoured for 65 years of refereeing. And he’s still out on the pitch most weekends. With the increased tempo, heat and pressure in Serbia it was clear what toll that takes on your body and how important it is to put the training in.” Bobby Madden on the importance of a recovery training after a matchday, even if you have a busy schedule. “I’m talking...
