Working with other match officials

Hi all

Does anyone have any tips for being appointed as an assistant referee for a referee that you know is particularly challenging to work with or you know is not up to the competency level of that particular fixture and therefore is going to cause yourself management issues?

Turn up, listen to the pre-match, follow the pre-match.

As long as what they’re doing or saying isn’t wrong in law, you’re there not assist not insist. We’ve all been out with such officials and it can be particularly challenging if you get put on dugouts, but it is what it is.

Do your best. Help out where you can. Recognise that it is sometimes ourselves who are the weaker member of the team.

If you're bench side - don't defend the indefensible.

Remember the referee is in charge. If he makes a call that you think is wrong don't throw him under the bus. You dont have to support it either if it is clearly wrong. Deal with it diplomatically if you have the bench and they are asking questions.

From what you say, he need even more of your support (within his terms) than a normal easy AR appointment. Take the games as much bigger opportunity to improve your AR soft skills.

It will be a difficult game but a great experience. Good luck.

That's always a sound approach right up until the moment when the bench stupidly start moaning at you, thinking that you've somehow got the authority to flag/buzz the referee on their behalf and get a decision/free kick overturned!!

As we were walking off at half time on Saturday the away manager asked me whether my ARs had the authority to flag fouls or just offsides. I informed him I trust them with fouls and that they had both signalled fouls in the first half.
He responded 'well he's just told me he's not allowed to give a foul'.
I thanked him for his time and asked him to move on.
Once we got in the changing room my AR informed me that the 'foul' in question that he had said he could not get involved with was just outside the penalty area... at the other end of the pitch.

I’m seriously considering adding this topic to my pre match brief with managers - they are just trying to look for inconsistencies so that they can moan even more

If the manager can see it from the TA then surely your AR can see it from his position

The classic ones are the other way round .. referee gives foul and manager says ‘can’t you help him out there ref!’ I’m sorry but this flag can’t ‘undo’ fouls I’m afraid

good point about the bus but just to say works the other way too. Had cup final appointment was getting grief from one bench as AR, I spoke to ref and at HT ref suggested I swop sides rather than tackle the issue - basically league reps in attendance too scared to upset clubs. Guess what..... the game ended with my AR that swopped sides having an earache.
