The Ref Stop

Who supplies flags?

I’ve been told I can run the line in local U18 and U21 leagues here in NE Scotland for practise (SHFL U18 and Aberdeenshire League).

Typically, who supplies the flags? As a lino, would I be expected to bring flags?

Im also going to be reffing Club Academy Scotland games. Are there Club ARs in this? If so, would I need to bring flags for them?

Any game that has a neutrally appointed referee, I would expect the referee to take them. Many Saturday leagues also stipulate the home club to provide them, but they're never usually required to because the referee brings his own for the assistants to use.

In short, acting as an AR you should never need to bring your own.

No club ARs in Scotland. Some grassroots refs will take flags to give to a coach to indicate ball out of play, but personally I’m happy to just have them raise their hand/shout/anything else to get my attention. Club Academy rules also state both teams should be on one touchline with parents behind a barrier on the opposite side so nobody will be on that line.
Long story short, no clubs ARs and you don’t need flags for Club Academy games.

I would agree with previous posts still recommending having a set of flags with you even if they never end up used, especially when you’re on the line. It’s always good to have a back up in case the referee forgets theirs or they break or whatever. They don’t have to be expensive ones though - mine were £5 off Amazon.

When in a team of 3 I would really expect all of the officials to have flags. That mitigates someone forgetting to pack them, or a breakage during the game.

As @RustyRef and others have rightly said, always have flags on you. I had a match a couple of weeks back where the ref forgot his, so we used the other linos as he had buzzers. One then broke about 20 mins in so we ended up having to use mine. Always expect the unexpected...

The Referee will usually have flags but always good to have your own. Might even be lucky to have buzzer ones!

Clubs usually only want a ref as they need to pay extra for ARs. The "big" teams will usually want ARs in their games. Do you have the different colours of top to match those of the ref though?
