Where do you keep your cards, book etc ?

Listening to a referee podcast and one of the topics being spoken about is where do you keep your cards.

Ive always kept mine together with my book and pencil top pocket.

An observer on there saying (not right or wrong) to keep book in back pocket and cards separate in front poclet.

I keep my yellow (write on) in my shorts pocket. My book and red in my shirt pocket with a sharpie clipped on each pocket and a red and yellow in my left pocket for second cautions.
 
Yellow in front right shorts. Red in top right shirt. Wallet with match card and a second set of red and yellow in top left shirt. One pen in each top shirt pockets.

Depending on convenience/situation I sometimes use my second set for second yellow + red.

Oh and the second set has rescued me numerous times when forgotten the first set.
 
One of the tips given (some might find useful) was to keep wallet in back pocket.

Have yellow card left L (leave on field of play)
Red Card R (Remove from field of play)
 
How about L (Leave filed of play). If you need to thank that long to try and match letters and figure left and right, I'd say you need more help than just tips on where to keep your cards :). Lol
 
Me personally have always kept cards together with my wallet, the way i started and the way i find easiest, everybody is different and changing it now would probably just confuse you.

Yellow card in left shorts pocket, notebook and coin in right shorts pocket, red card in right shirt pocket, and pen in left shirt pocket. Works for me.
 
I always keep a spare (or second yellow) set in my top right pocket.

I've never liked the look of when a referee writes in a notebook but then has to go fishing in pockets for a card after, so if I'm using a notebook then the cards will always live in there. If I'm using write-on cards then it's yellow in top left, red in back right. Sharpie clipped to each of those pockets, spare whistle also in that back pocket.
 
Yellow right short pocket. Red in back pocket and a red in the left short pocket (for second yellows) and a spare yellow in my top right pocket which I’ve never needed to use yet. I used to have a yellow in my book instead of my pocket, but my latest one is just too tight to hold my cards which is frustrating - I’ve ended up preferring having my yellow in my pocket as it’s less fiddly.

I’ve always thought when a referee goes to his back pocket, a red card is expected
 
My book is in my (right, when there are two) shirt pocket with a yellow and red card in it. Another yellow is in my right short pocket, and red in my (right) back short pocket. There is no definite way to do it but it is important to do it the same way every time lest you change things up and grab the wrong one.

Yeah, we've had this one on here before. Everybody seems to have their own view on the best place or reason to have an assortment of cards spread out over a number of pocket locations, but to be honest, I could never really understand why?

You need your notebook and pen to issue a caution/dismissal correctly anyway, so the most logical place to have both cards is inside your notebook. Simply select the appropriate card (there's only 2 of em after all) after following the correct disciplinary protocol and brandish accordingly. Why make it less straightforward? :)

I think it’s just a preference. For me, it’s genuinely now easier to use my pockets to get a yellow card out, as I’m not fiddling with the book. Same for second yellows. Since I played and now I’m a referee, I assume whenever a ref goes to his back pocket, he’s going for a red (of course not always the case) I like to keep my ‘main’ red in the back pocket for this reason

I’ve also never liked when the notebook comes out and you can see the red card - some players/spectators etc, might react as soon as they see it. Not a big thing though :)

Nobody can see my red card. It's tucked behind the yellow one inside the sleeve on the back of my notebook. ;)

I write on my card for cautions so what do I need a notebook for? I'm still able to follow the procedure.

I use that for keeping score or writing down send off names.

It's an each to own scenario though. Your way works for you, my way works for me.

I find writing on the yellow makes me take the card out of the pocket once my mind is made up on the caution. This often has the effect of calming folks down and diffusing situations, the offending team aren't badgering trying to downplay a challenge and / or home team see that I am already dealing with it so don't need to aggravate the situation.

What, you write names on your card or just numbers? Besides, if you want to be pedantic about it, you're not following the procedure. The correct procedure is to show the card last - after you've done everything else ....
 
I think what makes the most sense depends on expected protocols. I know in England the expected protocol is to write first, then show card, which makes the cards in the book make a lot of sense. In the US, that isn't the expectation--we'll write after showing the card. I keep a yellow in my front right pocket and a red in my back right pocket. I keep my wallet in my front left. I usually just use the loose card, and then pull the wallet out to right (the loose card is also helpful in being able to get out quickly when appropriate to diffuse a situation). Sometimes, if I'm slowing it down (especially at younger ages), I'll pull out the wallet, and extract the card after talking to the player.

I write name, number and time and offence. I don't show the card to the player, a la quick flash, just having it in my hand. So yes, I absolutely do follow exactly the correct procedure 😁
 
Wallet in right shorts pocket, write on yellow in left shorts pocket and red in back pocket. Realistically though since I dropped back down from senior levels I use the notebook as can't be confident enough that the team sheets are right, only exceptions would be where I need a very quick card to diffuse a potential situation.
