The Ref Stop

When is a backpass not a backpass?

I'd rather say 'backpass' on the field than 'handled the ball after it was deliberately kicked to him by a teammate' :P
Handball I won't say because 'deliberate handling' doesn't really take any longer.
But the 'traps and leaves it for the keeper' one is a bit of an oddity....given it's not really a 'kick'.

Foul throw, last man, professional foul, ungentlemanly conduct, swearing, foul language, phase of play, obstruction, shoulder to shoulder - there's loads of words players, managers, pundits "quote" from the "rules" that aren't there!

Phase of play is a coaching phrase that is used by commentators during analysis of referee incidents. Whilst not correct, it's technically not wrong!

People are lazy Ryan, they will say whatever is shorter. So long as you know the meaning of the terms, it's not a problem :)

Well apparently it is, since people are wondering what would happen if the defender passed the ball forward (presumably from the goal line) and the GK picked it up and was not, therefore, passed backwards.
