Hello Fellow Referee's ;)
Okay here is a question for you, 18 years in the middle and i have never come across this situation before, during one of my games last week (Keeping Details Private) i was confronted with a lot of dissent by a player, on calling the player over to me once the ball had gone out of play i asked the player when did he past his Referee test, to my amazement the player said last January :eek:, once this was confirmed by the captain that the player i was talking to was a Referee i was a little lost on what action to take, the action i did take was a firm talking to about his behavior towards a fellow referee, and the fact he should have known better, out of interest as a Referee, what would you have done?

I believe i took the right action, however some may say if he was not a Referee i would have cautioned him others may say that it would teach me not to be so nosy by asking questions lol .... :rolleyes:

Caution. Regardless of whether they are a referee or not they are still a player in the game and if they want to be stupid enough to give dissent despite being fully aware of C2, then thats their problem and even less leniency should be shown! :D
 
Thank you Harry for your advice and comment, a few people have said this to me, even after the game by the manager of the player.
Maybe if i was not in shock to his reply i may have cautioned him. :confused:
 
Happens to the best of us mate! :P Ive done the same thing a couple of times myself - just forget about it and if youre ever in the same situation again, you will know how to deal with it! :D

In the long run, if the FA put 2 + 2 together and come up with 4 and decide take action against him as a Referee, then he has his self to blame.:(
 
Any player misbehaving and silly enough to identify themselves to me as a fellow referee gets zero tolerance for dissent or OFFINABUS. It's the case of "you know the laws as well as I do". :D
 
Have to agree. I have a lot of platers turn round and say "but I'm a ref and that's not dissent"

My response "well today you're a player and to me that's dissent. Name please fella"

Every time. You wouldn't expect the ref to rifle a ball into the top corner and go "but I play for dog and duck united on a Saturday"
 
Had a coach at the start of a game who claimed to be a 'qualified referee'. Moment I walked on to pitch he was huffing about the nets, no corner flags(they arrived in plenty of time) and just other stuff. I had to tell him 'today, im the referee and I will go and check the pitch and if im happy then thats it'. He also had a right go at me when I gave a direct free kick for a push on the back he was screaming it was indirect and was nearly binned. To which he went 'Oh we will see about that' my response of 'you may claim your a referee but today im in charge and your just a coach this afternoon'.....never said another word the whole game.

Once on the pitch as a player, they are a player. Any difference between that and your ex's new fella / copper / judge / owner of your fave coffee ship yous top at every morning for a coffee, croissant and a paper?

actually scrap that last one - he'd get away with murder if I could sell the decision and keep my discount!
 
Ive lost count the amount of times ive sent "referees" off. Had one guy who I know was a referee as hed run the line to me not long before I refereed him. As soon as he walked onto the pitch he did nothing but get on my back. Had him in the book after 5 minutes for dissent, only took another 10 minutes and he walked, 2nd for dissent.
I refereed him later in the season too, guess what, walked him again for 2 yellows, for yup, you guessed it. Dissent. Although this time he lasted 45 minutes before he got his marching orders.

I prefer to give 2 Yellows rather than a str8 Red, they can't appeal :p ... But i will remember all this advice for the future 'if' it ever happens again, but one thing learnt, never ask a player when he passed his Referee exam ( Don't want to look stupid again!) :D :eek: ...

I love the "I'm a ref myself, I know what its like..." :rolleyes: conversation. If its a red, its a red, if its a yellow, its a yellow, regardless of wether they are a 'referee' or not. (Most are not real referees, and if they are, they should know better :P )
 
I really struggle with this one ...... maybe its just a personality thing , when I played I was always respectful to referees and now I am always respectful to players .....I reffed a fellow referee and friend Sunday just gone .....and he also whinged a few times about a few things he didnt agree with , when I called him over and gave him his final and public warning , he shut up .

An active qualified ref shoud always be able to see the game from the refs angle if they dont iMO they are showing off and over compesating

Thats why new referees are advised to choose between playing or THE DARK SIDE .......
 
Becoming a referee has done the opposite to me, when I played and I thought the referee made a mistake I used to think how the hell did he miss that? Now, if I believe a referee has made a mistake, I tend to try and think of reasons why he may have made the decision that he made, even when playing.
 
For me it doesnt matter if I was refereeing Howard Web. I'm in charge and he's a player, thats how it works. No one gets any favours or treated differently. Plus lets be honest passing the exam isnt rocket science, but being a decent ref isn't easy.
