The Ref Stop

West Ham Vs Wolves

I agree with retrospective action when there is clearly no contact, and that should be an immediate suspension. The very grey area comes in where there is contact, as who can say how much contact causes someone to go over. If it can be proven that the attacker instigated the contact then again I'd agree with retrospective action, but it needs to be very clear that this was the case.

It is impossible for referees on the pitch, players are expert at feeling contact and going over whilst they are still teenagers, arguably sometimes before they reach that milestone.

The Ref Stop
We maybe don’t talk so much on here about foul tolerance (the foul line, where your bar is in a specific match or context).

Working with higher level referees I notice how confident they can be with a higher bar (allowing more contact). Sometimes too confident if they have dropped down a few divisions and the players are not used to it. But then the best referees are able to be consistent, get the players trust and know how and when to reign it in.

I still get a minor thrill when a talented referee gives the classic “start of the second half foul”.
