Carroll's Red Card. Was that violent conduct? For me, yes, but Chico Flores should be fined for his reaction. He was rolling around as though he had been shot and that made it even harder for Webb.

From what I've been told cause I haven't seen it a yellow definitely but a red was harsh. I'll watch it in a bit and let you know.

Red! He meant it and got lucky. He caught him on the top of his forehead but only by luck. He swung his arm back i an attempt to cause harm (Red card offence). I'm surprised hes only had 1 red card in his career. Anyone remember last season when he made it his mission to take out David De Gea?

Nah...I just listened to his post-match interview and he said that he couldn't stop his forward momentum in time

Seems reasonable ;)

I thought it looked deliberate. Swung in frustration due the 'challenge' by Chico Flores whilst staring at the referee. He meant it. Webb got advice on it from one of his assistants, straight away could see Webb hold his ear piece.

I'm sure I saw Rooney pinching him, Matt, just before wrapping his leg around Andy's and making it look like Andy kicked him - something he picked up from Ashley, I believe.

Look, it was Man United - anything goes ;)

Andy Carroll - will his 'disgraceful' comment on twitter get him in more trouble, i wonder?

Problem with this one is that Flores has confused things with his overacting. But putting that aside it's pretty clear to me that Carroll meant to swing his arm and wanted to catch Flores and was probably hoping that it would look like momentum from the tangle and that the referee wouldn't see. Hence why he's staring straight at Howard Webb as he does it (classical psychological response).

For me it's: a foul on Carroll; a red for the arm swing retaliation (whether it hits the target or not shouldn't come into it); a yellow for Flores for a combination of the original messy challenge and for rolling around like an idiot and generally being a bit annoying (sell that how you want).

Carroll wants to get away with it cos he didn't really connect and cos Flores overreacted. He wants to try and tell us that the intention wasn't there, and in that he's either fooling himself, or lying to the rest of us, or just trying it on cos it does look soft. But, you intentionally swing an arm, and whether you connect or not, you've got to go.

LOAF says 'strikes or attempts to strike', so if you class it as striking, then it is still an offence, and violent conduct offence at that = red card stands

What it's worth considering is that the 3-man panel did not say that Webb got it right, but that 'no obvious error' was made. I think on balance of it was the right decision, but there is no way he would have been sent off had Flores reacted in proportion to the amount of pain he was in.

...... but there is no way he would have been sent off had Flores reacted in proportion to the amount of pain he was in.
but he should have been though - I have no doubt he was intending to strike Flores.

What Flores does after the 'strike' shouldn't come into it, when dealing with Carroll. My take is:
Foul on Carroll - FK
Red Card Carroll for attempting to strike opponent
Possible yellow for Flores for simulating injury, although this relies on the referee seeing the 'miss' clearly.

As I said, I agree it was the correct decision, although I don't think that you can give the red card and then book Flores for simulation as well. Having said that, I would like to see the FA take action against him (it would be appropriate for this to be done after the game, not at the time)

Not sure why you can't do both - Carroll for 'Attempting to Strike' and FLores for Simulation?

That's what all panels are asked to decide - whether there was an obvious error. Right or wrong doesn't come into it

As for Flores, ref saw incident and didn't caution Flores so no retrospective punishment possible as i understand it. Simulation not an option for me because contact was made (cf diving)
