As the title says, away team defender is running the ball out of play with home attacker hot on his heels.
As they both run out of play the attacker sticks out a leg, from behind and trips up the defender.

I'm my head I'm thinking VC or reckless. I didn't see any force in the kick out, just a trip on the defender hence a YC. No one argued against it at the time.

What do you think? Any kick out is VC and a RC or situation dependant?

It depends

Is it a trip or a kick because your post says both?

If he pulls back and kicks the legs out from under someone you can sell a RC if it’s with excessive force.

A trip can be excessive force but very rarely - if it’s a trip this reads as careless or reckless.

I read the situation as a trip, no excessive force, no malice sort of action, hence the YC.

I don't think I could of sold a talking to only a spit it down as a careless foul on this occasion

You have identified two very different scenarios / consequences here - VC versus a reckless challenge.

VC is only involved when a player is not challenging for the ball so this is an important first distinction to make.

If challenging for the ball, the questions become is it a foul and if so, is it careless, reckless or serious foul play?

Based on your description above you now seem more confident it was a foul and was either careless or reckless.

This may be a good opportunity to revisit the good book and confirm what you think the appropriate sanction is based on the LOTG.
