The Ref Stop

Tim Howard

Just watched MOTD, that has to be one of the strangest things I've ever seen.

For those who haven't seen it. The ball was passed back to Tim Howard, who tried to let it run into the box, but having realised there wasn't enough pace on it he just fell to the floor and lay on the ball. At no point did it touch his hands.

The ref gave nothing, but it just didn't seem right. What can you give in that situation? IFK for unsporting behaviour? I've never seen anything like it.

A major gripe too; a "reckless" challenge IS NOT A RED CARD!!!!! Oh, it's DOGSO, none of this last man nonsense. Take note MOTD.

Do you mean IDFK for playing in a dangerous manner? I've not seen it, but putting your body on top of the ball where your inviting an opponent to kick you to get at the ball is for me clearly playing in a dangerous manner.

I have MOTD recorded will have a watch a little later.

I did, it was late when I posted this! :D

Yes playing in a dangerous manner would be the reason to blow up I think.

Martin Keown seemed to want a red card for "Ungentlmanly conduct AND denying an obvious goal scoring opportunity"!!!!

Ungentlemanly conduct? Let's put that law in - there will be abandonments due to lack of players on the pitch on a regular basis!!

I have just watched the incident .......Im not sure Howard did anything wrong TBH ?

He probably had no idea what he was doing , but clever all the same and he got away with it .

Just watched motd - it's an idfk. And a very odd incident. Good case for dogso also. Bizarre.

Another incident in the same game - First half Jordi Gomez runs at Everton defender and goes down theatrically just outside the box. Lee mason goes to blow, whostle mouth - I think it was for simulation rather than to give a freekick - but then changes his mind and allows play to continue. Do you think he realised it would have been the second yellow?

And how lucky is Wickham to stay on the pitch? It was a clear penalty but also looked a clear dogso.

Who would be a referee eh?

Definitely an IFK for Playing in a Dangerous Manner as the player (GK) is putting himself in a dangerous situation. Outside his area. Inside his area, gets a bit more complicated.

Could be argued for DOGSO in the following sense:
  1. Distance? Close enough to matter, the keeper out and no other defenders.
  2. Likelihood of gaining control? Maybe. GK has ball, back to attacker. Can attacker steal the ball?
  3. Direction? Headed right at the goal.
  4. Location/# Of Defenders? GK was the only player between attacker and goal, closest defender was 5+ yards behind attacker.
  5. Does an IFK/DFK result? Playing in a Dangerous Manner results in an IFK.
The only place that fails there is #2, the likelihood of the attacker gaining control. If you (as a ref) felt that ITOOTR the attacker would easily gain control, then when the defender (GK in this case, outside his area) goes down on top of the ball, then you must whistle and card. Followed by IFK.

As an aside, here's a quick vine of it:
