If it's taken correctly then the law is clear. It's a retake.

If it's not taken correctly the law is not so clear but common consensus is a TI to the opponents.

I thought that too but when it came up for debate again a little while back with some colleagues, I decided to ask for an official answer from the IFAB. It seems I had it wrong.

Same, any time I have said it never came in, seems to be the easier call, afterall, the other team never had the throw in the first place so giving the retake simply maintains the status quo

I had one last Sunday funnily enough (As AR) - I gave throw other way, and , to my surprise, original throwing team accepted it.

As you both say though, maybe not a great call if you are ref on your own/with only CARs to help.
