The sub that never was

Had an incident at a tournament where a team made an unauthorised sub and had me thinking. If I'm refereeing and caution 9 for the team and he then goes off as part of an unauthorised sub, technically I'd be cautioning the person who entered for doing so without permissions but also second cautioning and sending off green 9 for leaving without permission.

After this has happened, would you put the player who has entered he field illegally off the pitch (not a red card) since the person he should have been subbed for is no longer a player?

As it's not a 'proper' substitution I think you can correctly caution both the leaving player and the entering player - both are separate crimes!

I've never actually cautioned someone for leaving the pitch without my permission - perhaps under law 18 - but unless the player is leaving the pitch as part of an unauthorised substitution I'm happy for them to wander off the pitch for treatment, a drink, a rest, a fag - whatever!
