The Ref Stop

The Heat

I accepted a line for tomorrow a few weeks ago - not massively happy about that decision now! Checked with the ref this morning and he described it as "still on as far as I know" which....doesn't sound like someone who's going to make the call to cancel.
May I ask what sort of standard it is?

The Ref Stop
I’ve got a friendly at Torquay tomorrow evening. I’m 4th man so have minimal (if any) running to do but I’m still not too keen on the heat! God help the man in the middle! 😂
You/they will be fine Will - 22c feels like 19c at KO, Met Office says.

They did say weather would start to break down from the West on Tuesday evening, so, for once!, that makes sense!

I hear most friendlies scheduled for tomorrow night are being postponed. Although temps will probably have dropped to relatively high/normal levels, the NHS would benefit from an absence of hard ground injuries. For that reason, if I had a game, I'd be suggesting postponement

I suspect in the South East that is as much because the trains and tubes have collapsed rather than the heat itself. In London you aren't really going anywhere at the moment and the roads are clogged as a result.

That takes me back to my commuting days, nothing like an announcement like that over the tannoy followed by the ever present "Good Service on all other lines" .......What other lines!!!!! - to make your commute go with a swing - my sympathies to all of you commuting, at any time, not just when its hot!

Lets be honest, hot, cold wet, windy, industrial action, lack of staff, operational reasons (that's a good one as well!) - the list is endless!

Rant over - sorry refs!

Is that for a Devon Derby? I was hoping to go along but sadly have a meeting that would be very undiplomatic to miss. More's the pity.

Enjoy the game mate. Hopefully a bit cooler. Forecast here is rain now and highs of 22. Might be bit warmer further east but shouldn't be too warm
Should be a good experience!
I’m quite happy that I’m on the sidelines and haven’t got to run around 😂

That's my point Peter, yet check the actual forecast for Central London, pretty good guess for hottest place, and midday temp on Monday is forecast at 'only' 37C. Its the same with any probable hottest place location you come up with. Actual forecast 37, lets call it 40 and get everyone to click on the article. Its the way of the world now I'm sorry to say.
I'm sorry, but I feel that's a slight mischaracterisation. When the Met Office said that they were forecasting a high of 40, they were not simply rounding up from 37, they were forecasting exactly what they predicted the high to be. And as we can see, they weren't wrong, with multiple sources reporting that the temperature has already exceeded 40 - and may yet go higher.

25 degrees and cloudy forecast for kick off tonight. That's probably better than the 3pm friendlies last Saturday afternoon when the sun was baking down.

Defintely an official drinks break each half and unofficially during stoppages.

Living in fairly central London I can certainly confirm it went over 40C. Currently 37C at my desk, and London is in a state of emergency as there are at least 10 fires caused by the heat.

It seems that the extreme heat may have passed, but heat often breaks down with thunder storms.

Perhaps something that goes under discussed (although it has been discussed before on here) is if and when we should abandon for lightning

Interested to hear thoughts on this. We are not going to abandon on hearing a few rumbles in the distance, but when should we be fleeing the field for the threat of lightning?

I think if lightning became persistent, then I'd consider bringing players off. I can only recall one occasion I've refereed when it's been lightning, and it wasn't even over us. I could see it in the distance every minute or so, and did wonder what I'd be doing if it came closer, but it didn't, so no need for alarm.

Yeah, I don't think it's worth messing around - any visible lightning and we go indoors until it seems to have cleared.
