The Ref Stop

Sunderland v Arsenal

It was a shame VAR didn't get involved with the Gabriel caution yesterday. Mistaken identity.

Gabriel went over to Konsa and pulled him away. The ref cautioned Gabriel instead of Konsa.

I think this would have been a Premier first for mistaken identity?

The non-overturn of the Sunderland penalty was a disappointing decision/outcome too.

At best it's mutual holding, in reality ballard is 100% responsible for the fall.

I wouldn't say it was mistaken identity, rather was a misjudgement of who the worst offender from Arsenal was.

Agreed, however, I guess the process was correct?

Correct process but incorrect decision as both we holding, but Ballard's judo throw caused the fall

I'm not sure what you are referring to?

Gabriel wasn't part of it until he pulled Konsa away. This was at the end of the match
I was saying that I don't think VAR could have got involved on the basis the caution for Gabriel was mistaken identity. I would agree that the referee mistook Gabriel pulling players away for an involvement worthy of a caution, but that isn't mistaken identity. It would be mistaken identity if he saw Gabriel doing it but cautioned someone else by mistake.

Misreading the situation isn't the same thing as mistaken identity.

The penalty award to Sunderland was controversial, but I must stress, it was in no way egregiously wrong
Yes, it amounted to mutual holding, but holding in the penalty area has become an impossible problem to manage and players need to accept that the stakes are very high, especially for defenders
Arsenal rely upon holding in the penalty area to achieve their success they've had at dead ball situations. Hence the motivation for Arteta to come out with a scathing attack on MOTD, as he knows a clamp down will hinder their tactics

Nothing in football is surprising any more. The clubs have more clout than the organizations running the game, and the rule book carries less and less relevance with each passing year. There's no question that Arteta's focused and vehement protestation was on the very serious end of 'bringing the game into disrepute', and it's incredibly important that he's hit with the most severe punishment
Of course, a slap on the wrists is effectively a green light for perpetual recurrence, and is the most likely outcome
He's a disgrace. He's not alone

Just doesn't sit right that we just rubber stamp an incorrect decision - the process needs to be better

I don't think it was a penalty at all and it should of been overturned, Ballard has Konsas arm locked in and it was Ballard that caused the fall. I wouldn't blame the referee but the VAR has too see who caused both of the players to go down and see it was the Sunderland player who caused that.

Can't have a situation where we don't overrule a wrong decision just because the referee has seen a coming together but I do suspect this will go down on the KMI as the on field decision is incorrect but not enough for VAR to overrule.

This is why I said the correct process but the wrong decision.

Ref has seen only Konsa's arms, hasn't seen the Judo roll and has assumed it was Konsa's action to bring down Ballard.

VAR can see the whole action, but hasn't re-reffed the game because there was some mutual holding at the beginning. But yes, something as blatant as that shouldn't have been given.

Gabriel had nothing to do with the pushing between Konsa and a Sunderland player. So the mistaken identity would be because Konsa pushed someone and the ref thought it was Gabriel, when it wasn't, he wasn't near the situation. So the offense was the tit for tat pushing.

Not sure how anyone can justify cautioning a player for pulling their team mate away from the opposition.

I’d hope, if I’d have given that as a pen, that whoever the nerdy malcolm in the business park on VAR would be like “oi, archer, you might want to have another look at this”

Complete turd. Never a penalty.

I don't disagree with you that he got the wrong man, but I don't think it was because he mistook Konsa for Gabriel, rather he has just made a mess in terms of recognition of what actually happened. We've all done it when there's a confrontation where we lose one or both of the instigators, but that doesn't make it mistaken identity, it makes it a mistake, they are two different things. I had it myself in a step 3 game, after a melee I cautioned the wrong man, given (as the observer took far too much pleasure in telling me) one was white and the other black it can't have been mistaken identity, rather by brain just didn't process the situation properly.

We also don't know what was said over VAR, and whether Gabriel perhaps did or said something that the cameras didn't capture. If VAR asked him if he meant to caution Gabriel and he replied yes there isn't really anywhere they can go with it.

For me mistaken identity is when something clearly happened and the referee very obviously got the sanctioned players wrong. Obvious example where an Arsenal player handled on the line and the referee sent the wrong player off, think it might have been Oxlade-Chamberlain and Gibbs from memory.

Mistaken identity has already happened in the Prem when the ref got John Beresford and Warren Barton mixed up
