Pen given to Netherlands for push in the back. VAR reviews, no pen.

Absolutely baffled as to how that wasn't given so here I am hoping to understand why.

Cheers.

Totally agree. For me, clear movement of the player's arm into the opponent's back, causing her to go down. While it wasn't the most violent push you'll ever see, it certainly wasn't what I would call a clear and obvious error to give it. So not one that should have been overturned, in my eyes.

Thought penalty in real time, thought penalty in slow motion, thought penalty during the VAR check.

I thought it was a brave and 100% correct call on the field, and that VAR overturned it was wrong and a bad use of VAR to re-referee the game. We have to remember once again that it doesn’t have to be assault and battery for a penalty to be called. It was a foul that impacted the game that occurred in the penalty area. It’s a penalty.

(No rooting interest in the game at all, so I feel like I have no bias toward the teams.)
