On BT Sport they’ve just said Neil Davis is late for the game, so he’ll miss the majority of the first half. Leaving Kevin Friend on the line. Would SG1 referees ever practice being on the line at their meetings in case of them needing to go on the line in situations like this, as it must have been a long long time since Kevin Friend was on the line. Also, would there be any consequences for the late AR?

Neil Davies wasn't on the game, something happened to Con Hatzidakis who was supposed to be AR, I'm guessing he got injured in the warm up. I think Neil Davies lives in North London so would have been the easiest official to get there quickly.

I doubt SG1 referees pracice running the line as it is so rare for a 4th official to end up on the line.

I commented on the wrong thread sorry, was wondering why my post wasn’t showing up in the City vs Arsenal thread 😂

Raised this tons, does not even need football knowledge, merely nursery school counting
you have one ref
you have two Ars
so, twice as much chance of being needed on the line.

I have long suggested top flight do two lines per season, even in a semi pro or womens game, one, to keep their hand in on the line, two, to give a helping hand to some progessing newbie, some insight, feedback etc, a wee boost for Martin reffing Lytham St Anns v Whitehaven.
Instead, we wait till it happens ( reactive) then go, omg he aint done a line for 14 years.
Not seen the game bar 2 mins of highlights so it appears good fortune rather than good managment has intervined

While I know the SG1 referees aren't expecting to run lines, if I were a SG1 referee I'd probably still try to find a way to run a line 3-4 times a season - even if it was a U16 academy level match - just to make sure I'm not completely cold if I was thrown into the mix. Not sure if PGMOL would allow something like this, however.

Just knowing that I may have to run a line as the fourth if someone goes down would make me want to find a way to keep those skills at least somewhat sharp.

At minimum having them do some flash lag tests when they get together for meetings or training a few times a year.

It's definitely possible. We have a SG1 AR that takes on step 6 and sometimes lesser middles when not on PL assistant duties in our county, sure the same could happen in reverse albeit a bit more high profile and potentially un nerving for the ref in the middle.
