Hello all,
I'm a 19 year old college student and youth football/soccer referee from the US. I've been refereeing youth matches since I was 13 and I have developed a passion for it. I've had the idea for a while to start a YouTube channel about refereeing, specifically targeted towards newer/grassroots referees. Thinking on my own experience, I would've gotten a lot of use out of a dedicated channel/series with tips, tricks, and advice for new referees, and there are a few videos already on YouTube but these are seemingly sparse and not very extensive.
I wanted to post this here to see what you all thought about this idea, and get initial opinions. I've been browsing this form on and off for a while and I think it's a wonderful community, so I hope some of you can take the time to give me a bit of feedback. Specifically I had a few things I wanted to address:
1. Do you think a series of videos targeted towards beginner referee tips (both game-specific, such as positioning, signaling, foul recognition, etc, and more general, like getting certified/recertified, communicating with assignors, keeping up fitness) would be helpful/necessary, or are these things already addressed well enough for beginners through existing structures? And if this is the case, is there any niche/area that might not be covered as well that might be more helpful to have a guidance video made on?
2. I know many on this forum are refereeing within the UK, and I personally have no personal experience or knowledge of how youth/grassroots refereeing works there. If anyone here has insight into both the US and UK grassroots/youth scenes and can comment on what the differences may be, I would appreciate it. I can also provide more details/context into my own experience if that would help. I'd tailor my content towards what I'm personally familiar with, but my goal is to help as many new referees as possible so if there are differences that may help me add a bit of nuance to my videos I'd love to look into that.
I hope this post didn't turn out too long, though I think a refereeing form might have a bit better of an attention span than the general population. If anyone here has experience with referee content creation or anything similar, or even just has any words of wisdom, feel free to reach out or comment. Thanks for reading.
