FIFA referee Nyberg is accused of interfering in a Division 6 game

According to Sportbladet's sources, the star referee made his way down from the stands and made sure a player was sent off. Afterwards, Nyberg apologised.

13 minutes had passed in Sunday's match in Division 6 Dalarna North. The score was 0-0 on Stora Ensoplan in Borlänge when a player from visiting team Amsberg committed a foul against the home team Kvarnsveden’s goalkeeper. The referee issued a yellow card. But while the goalkeeper was being cared for, a person stepped up to the assistant referee. It was Glenn Nyberg, several times voted as the country's best referee, who this year became the refereeing officer for Kvarnsveden. After a brief discussion with Nyberg, the assistant referee called for the referee, who changed his decision from yellow card to red card. With only 10 players on the pitch, Amsberg fell apart and lost 4-0.

Sportbladet has spoken to two spectators who confirmed that Nyberg, who allegedly was dressed in a Kvarnsveden shirt, clearly influenced the referee trio. “He wanted a red card. Then there was a red card”, one of them said. “Of course, wanted it.” Amsberg has turned to Dalarna Football Association in connection with the actions of Glenn Nyberg. “What Glenn did affect the match”, one leader said. “Are you saying that there is a difference between whether an unknown private person is talking to the referee and if Glenn Nyberg does? Of course. If a Champions League referee tells an assistant referee in Division 6 that it should be a red card, then it's clear he wanted it. Everyone gets it.” “We want an apology, a confession that he was wrong. Then we may be able to demand replay, because we feel deprived of an honest match”. Sportbladet has contacted Dalarnas Fotbollförbund and Glenn Nyberg with no results. But, according to Amsbergs SK, Nyberg has contacted the association on Monday and apologised for the entire situation.

That should be a suspension incoming and I'm not sure you ever get back to being fully trusted by any association

I had something similar a few years back where I was AR. We had an observer.

The referee blew for an IDFK for a passback to the goalkeeper. The restart was being set up from where the pass had been kicked.

Then, the observer, who was behind me, not so subtly chimed in, "Shouldn't that be from where the keeper picked it up?"

Well, I flagged and told the referee. But as soon as I did, the bench absolutely exploded! They'd clearly noticed the observer.

The observer ended up moving to the opposite side of the pitch for the rest of the game and, let's just say, they caught a lot of grief from the bench for the remainder of the match.

Any links for the OP?

Is this the official story or is it as it was told by a spectator supporting the team that lost?

If Nyberg leaves his post as a result, will he consider a similar role at Nottingham Forest (recently vacated)?
I doubt that as he is still an active referee in the Swedish top flight and on the FIFA list (and UEFA Elite), and he's only 36 so still has plenty of time.

Germany has a weird thing where referees are sponsored by clubs. I was listening to a 'For Refs Sake' podcast and they had a chap who had refereed in Germany on. Clubs sponsor refs. You aren't allowed to ref the team that sponsors you.

So maybe related to that.

That’s a fairly common European thing. When you become e a referee you do so through a club, then once you’ve qualified you remain associated to that club.

I had something similar, was coaching a referee this season and went to speak to him at half time. There was a caution seconds before half time and I asked him what it was for, I said I’d assumed it was dissent but obviously couldn’t be as the player didn’t go off. At that point he legged it to tell the player he couldn’t come back on for 10 minutes.

Second half started and a player came over to me to say “you’re an assessor not VAR”. Perfectly comfortable with my actions as I didn’t tell the referee he was wrong, rather just asked what the caution was for and that triggered his response. I can’t help suspecting the Glenn Nyberg situation was similar, find it very hard to believe that a top FIFA referee would think he would get away with influencing an outcome in the way it has been suggested.

If the article is to be believed he was sat in the benefiting teams shirt. It looks to me he is a fan and he let his love and his massive influence disrupt the refereeing team.

In his eyes it might have been a super obvious decision and he basically pointed out to a div 6 refereeing team the mistake they had made. I doubt he would have done it if it was against his team.

If the article is to be believed
And that is the key thing, when these kinds of allegations are made there is almost always two sides to the story.

I've been accused of misconduct as a referee and a league official, and on both occasions it was absolute nonsense where the allegations didn't even come close to reflecting the truth.
