I know I got this call right, but I’m looking for some validation.

Cup match. Team losing badly. Losing team defender gets fouled and I award a free kick. Was a minor foul.
Said defender walks towards attacker and attempts to elbow attacker in the face. Just about grazed him but no real contact.

Straight red from me.

No one complained. His team mates apologise to me for his behaviour.

Was I harsh with a straight red as he only grazed him? I know the laws say an attempt to strike an opponent so in law I’m right.

Same as a "kick out" at an opponent. Even if the force used is negligible (as per LOTG) the expected outcome is still a dismissal. 👍

Except that the currents have changed on kick outs and minimal force kick outs are (for better or worse) often cautioned today. In the OP, it was (as described) a clear attempt to commit VC, which is VC.
