Real Betis V Roma

Unbelievably 4 red cards shown in a pre season game, 3 to Roma players and a 4th shown to Mourinho after coming onto the pitch to confront the referee.

First things first, it's a clear handball and the goal should never of stood and this is exactly why VAR was bought in but because there was no VAR, we had this chaos which is not helped by some agression from the referee(in terms of how he showed his cards). I actually believe this is a situation where the ref has made himself a target and in the heat of the moment could of been pushed or even punched. This probably lead to a further 2 red cards later on in the game as no doubt the Roma players probably lost their heads.

And to think some people want VAR scrapped!!

Agree with most of your post. Referee has to use his personality and any 'controlled' aggression to positively influence the game. In this instance it seems to have impacted the game negatively.

Disagree with what you are implicating in your last statement. You have to look at holistically and not based on one instant. People want VAR scrapped because it is creating more controversy than it removes. Even in places where it is used well, it is still not doing what it is sold to the people for as "minimum interference – maximum benefit"

The idea that the referee was ‘aggressive’ here is such an English mindset. No more or less so than any Spanish/Italian official - Lahoz/Kuipers/Orsato have all gotten to the top of Europe with similar techniques in similar situations.
