Rangers v Hearts end of game

Strange final whistle to this match, referee appears to give a hand ball offence (although unclear), then blows final whistle as he casually chats to the players who are unclear why he has stopped the game.

Some commentators believe he stopped the match to complete a VAR check for a penalty which time would be added on for but not added on for a free kick. Hence when VAR confirms offence is outside the area he blow for full time.

Yeah I think it was pretty much as you described it. After the shot was hit he probably thought “that’s it time’s up” before realising there might be a VAR check for the handball claim, so couldn’t “properly” blow for full time, as such. It looked messy but it was straightforward really.
There was a similar example of this a few weeks ago in the Celtic v Aberdeen league game. Shot was blocked by an Aberdeen defender and it was immediately cleared for a corner. Referee delayed the corner for VAR check but when the check was over he blew for full time.
