I like all grass roots referees really welcomed this when it was introduced at the start of last season. What has happened to this ? I regularly see on TV players verbally abusing referees whilst jabbing a finger in their direction and they are no longer punished. Does anyone know if they have been told to be more lenient or are they no longer assessed on this ?

The Referee Store
Just like any other initiative that helps grassroots referees, the honeymoon period is over.

Like most things the media kick up a stink and demand a clamp down, the FA duly obliges and referees at the professional levels go "card crazy" (only doing what they should be doing in the first place). Media then kicks up a stink again that referees have lost the plot and are sucking the fun and entertainment out of the game as "They have a duty to keep it 11v11 blah blah blah", so the FA tell referees to ignore it again.

Same thing happened with the supposed clamp down on holding the box. Mike Dean particularly took a zero tolerance stance to it and the media went into meltdown about the number of penalties being given and the "clampdown" has all but disappeared again.

Refereeing at grass roots and top level are becoming increasingly separated. VAR will only add to this.
