Player removing shin pads during game

So, had a weird one on Sunday and couldn’t find anything in the LOTG on it.

Player removes his shin pads during open play (adults game), places them next to the goal off the field of play. I noticed him just as he was doing it as he idiotically decided a defensive corner was the right time

Anyways, told him to put them back on and he then said do I really have to wear them? I just went yes how long have you been playing for?

Any suggestions?

Open play? At a corner?

Anyway, player should be made to leave Field of play to correct equipment and should not return until the next stoppage when the referee can I inspect (unless can be checked by another match official).

If he does it again it's a caution. Law 4 is your friend for this one.

I worded it so badly when I’ve reread it basically the corner came in and he just stopped and took them off!

Happy days, I’ll remember that one just in case!
