The Ref Stop

Player entering the box during penalty.

Had a game this afternoon, just got in. Was quite heated one with six bookings and lots of incidents. One of which I give a penalty for an amber player who was shielding the ball only to get a green defender try and tackle him from behind but just hits the guy in the legs.

Amber player starts to take kick and a green defender runs Into the area so much that his almost level with me. Amber promptly smacks penalty straight at keeper down the middle. I signal retake and the place erupts, one player booked for dissent, a few more warned.

What is people's tolerance with these incidents? this was the first time I've had one who is clearly taking the mick.

Which bit are you unsure of? If the player strays into the box then its a retake (unless its an attacker in which case IFK). I would have very little tolerance of that. If the player is almost level with you, rather than just entering the D as the ball is kicked, I wouldn't hesitate. If your question is about the tolerance regarding the dissent, as posted in numerous areas on this forum, that would be entirely a matter for your tolerance level. Personally, having warned the player (which you appear to have done to at least two others, so I would assume the offending one as well) if he doesn't take the hint he takes the card.

I'm not unsure of the decision, the guy was miles in the box and whilst I doubt it made the striker spam his shot to the keeper, it was illegal. But it's rare a guy gets that far forward before the kick is taken.

By law if any one steps even slightly over the line it's retaken unless scored. But I'm never that rigid with it, I think I remember Mike Dean ordering a retake over a Frank Lampard pen for the same thing and people were going made over it. It's rare it's ever given.

If he is that far in (clearly more than a yard or two inside) it's a retake like you indicated. However, like you experienced penalty retakes cause mayhem!

Last penalty retake I gave = 2 red cards for OFFINABUS.

I have also learnt a hard lesson about telling players not to come in the box before the kick is taken, while setting up for the penalty. :)

Damned if you do, damned if you don't.

Interesting game matty?

Interesting is one way of putting it. The two teams spent more time offering each outside for a fight than actually bothering to play football. Considering it was a div two county game I was shocked at how poor it was, I've ref'd teams in lower divisions who would have played them off the park. Home side were convinced I had a vendetta against them, players screaming about everything, if someone so much as touched another player whilst jumping for a header it was apparently a horrific pushing foul that sent them all mental. I won't be upset if I never ref either of them again.

One moment typified it for me. Orange winger running down the left, green slides in for tackle but orange sees it coming and passes inside to a teammate. Green slides past orange a good metre and a half in front of him so orange throws himself through the air as if shot by a sniper. To me there's no foul and orange are attacking still so play on, me thinking a warning to orange for simulation but he decides to run after me a good 30 metres shouting about the shocking tackle he just suffered. He was promptly booked for dissent.

How did yours go? Better than last weekend I would guess.

It would be hard to be worse than last week!

I had a scrappy at times but very passionate game. Hard but surprisingly fair. No cards shown, just a few verbal warnings handed out, which did the trick. I would be lying if I didn't say events of the week before hadn't affected me though and early in the game my confidence was very fragile.

Luckily I settled down and while I wouldn't say I enjoyed the game like I usually would have (bit too tense), it normalised things so hopefully normal service is now resumed!

That's it for me, if I've had a game where either I feel I haven't done well or other things have made it like yours last week, the first thing I want to do is get back out there and ref again.
