The Ref Stop

Peter Bankes

I noticed on tonights game that Peter Bankes is now wearing a FIFA badge whereas just a few rounds ago(Fulham v Chelsea) he wasn't. So what is the criteria to become a FIFA referee because he is very inexperienced as a top flight official and it seems after David Coote and Andy Madley become FIFA refs in the last year, if your a youngish referee and you referee a handful of top flight games, your on the FIFA list which may say something of how few referees there has been coming through until recently.

Peter Banks has been around a while now in SG2.
Refs are nominated by FA.
There are only a few of our elite refs who are eligible for FIFA list, that aren't already on it.

He got onto FIFA at the end of last year, but I believe there was a shortage of badges. I believe the criteria is that you have to be 37 or younger, and be refereeing on your country's top division, so Peter Bankes meets both those requirements.

There could be difficult discussions ahead soon, as for the first time in ages the list is close to capacity for English referees and no one is really close to having to retire. So for the likes of England and Jones to get on someone would have to be removed.

They can start with Madley, Bankes and Coote.

Good list. I've worked with three people on the list - yay!

A good reminder to anyone even remotely considering refereeing to try it early. That 37 cut off means you've got to start in your 20s at most.

why whats wrong with them, i would rather watch them ref than atkinson or mason

Coote is consistently poor as a referee and VAR and appears very arrogant. The other two have been on the SG1 list for less than two seasons and are on the FIFA list by virtue of England never filling their quota for referees on the list in recent years. Would you appoint either of them to a Merseyside/Manchester derby?

Has it always been 37?

I listened to a podcast Q & A with Roger East and he was talking about games he did in Europe and he was much older than 37. He retired in 2019 when he was 54 I believe.

Thanks for that explanation. I must say though it does seem aslong as there is spaces and your a young referee in the prem your on the FIFA list because all the other more experienced referees are too old which tells you there is just not enough SG1 referees.

Out of England's FIFA refs, only Kavagnah, Taylor and Oliver seem to get the CL and international matches and Pawson get some EL matches. Attwell has been on the list for a good while but I(might be wrong) have not seen him referee any European or international games and given how inexperienced the 3 just recently qualified are at the top level, I'll be surprised if they are involved in any competitions until the season after next.

It is likely that the new FIFA guys will get preliminary and early rounds matches next season after a couple of outings to Europe as 4th official, VAR, etc ... if there is a next season...

That's because Champions League games after the early rounds mainly only go to elite category referees, and only Taylor and Oliver are on that list. Kavanagh and Pawson are both category 1 so will get the next level of games, but Kavanagh seems to be getting better games, presumably because he is younger and more likely to progress. Realistically, at 41 Pawson has no chance of progressing to elite.

Attwell, Bankes, Coote, Madley and Tierney are all category 2 so won't get any better than Europa League or internationals between lower ranked nations.

in place of the 2 i have mentioned, in a heartbeat

It is 37 for getting on to FIFA, not for coming off. I think 46 is the age for retirement, but they now aren't as strict on it and offer extensions.

Don't think Roger East has ever been on FIFA lists though, certainly not as a referee.

The lower rated referees could get U19 & U17 international fixtures as part of their development
