It is tenuous at best, comes down to whether the wording of law 3 trumps the wording of law 5, or the other way round. Given the potential ambiguity I wouldn't be including that on a LoTG exam.
But then common sense would dictate it's the right thing to do. The offender should be sent off and the team should be reduced to 10. The player they've subbed on can still be subbed on, but it would have to be for a new player.

Don't disagree from a common sense perspective, but LoTG questions should be black and white and not based on common sense.

I think it is clear in the Laws. A substitute only enters with the permission of the referee. That cannot be delegated to the fourth. Without the permission of the ref, the substitute cannot complete the sub process as the substitute has not been signalled onto the field by the referee, which is required in Law 3.

I can't say I'd agree with this definitively. If the referee says when my 4O says you can come in, take it as you have my permission to a player who is going off the field, then permision is given by inference. Same goes for substitution if it was in the prematch instructions. But I do get the point about delegation not being mentioned in law.

That is a fair point, but then @one also makes a valid counter point.

My whole point on this is it is too vague for a LoTG exam.

I think if you add the caution in there, it makes it a worse question. Technically, yes, the sub could be cautioned for entering without the referee’s permission. But in the real world is anyone cautioning the sub for doing what the 4O told him to do?
