They are comparing it to referee assaults, but I really don't buy that. For starters that is a much, much more severe level of assault than most that we have seen on referees. Of course any assault, whether it is on a player, coach or referee is absolutely wrong, but this is taking it tio a whole new level.
That will be a lifetime ban for the referee, of this I have no doubt. Should a player who commits the same act against a referee be subjected to a lifetime ban as well? Yes, in my opinion they should, but currently the rules in place, at least in England, don't allow for that. This absolutely should be changed, but what can't be overlooked is that the act of this referee was absolute thuggery of the highest order.
