Offside Clarification

Had an interesting one in yesterdays game which was a cup match and I'd like some clarification if I got the decision right.

Blue v Red to which blues are playing a high defensive line to catch reds offside. At one point the reds counter attack and subsequently instead of dropping off the blue defence keep a high line trying to catch the runners offside.

At this point the ball is played by red midfielder directly between the two blue central defenders. From my view point I can see that the two red attackers on the right hand side of the pitch are clearly offside (they are nearer to the touchline than where the ball is played into at this point). Blue players shout up for offside but I notice that the two offside red players have both checked their runs realising that they are offside and are at this point moving away from the ball as it goes between the two blue central defenders. Based upon the ball being played directly down the middle of the pitch nowhere near the two red attackers and neither attacker making an attempt to get to the ball I do not blow for offside. A red midfielder then runs from deep from an onside position and beats both blue defenders to the ball before scoring.

Cue complaints from blue defenders that I should of given offside against the two red attackers on the far right hand side.

I made the decision not to give offside on the basis that - the ball wasn't played anywhere near the two offside players and neither made any attempt to retreieve the ball.

Thoughts/Advice/Comments/Criticism very much welcome!

From the description, sounds like you got it absolutely correct. Well done.

Nothing wrong with that - they did not interfere with the ball, an opponent are gain an advantage by being in that position, ergo they have not committed an offence.

Yup, got that one spot on.

Not your fault the players don't understand the rules.

Sorry, should read, not your fault the DEFENDERS don't understand the offside law, it seems obvious the ATTACKERS understand it well enough!
