Odd game with 4 pens

Gabriel

Serial whistler
Level 7 Referee
Hi all, I had a really odd one this morning. I had an U12 Div 3 game, so nothing major, but somehow it turned into absolute pandemonium (particularly with one coach). Both sides were decent, but in the second half I ended up having to give 4 pens in 10 minutes (2 to each side, all scored, finished 2-2 luckily for me). Everyone was in agreement that the first 2 and the 4th were the right decision, but the problems started with the 3rd which I gave about 4 minutes before the end of the game. From where I was stood, I had an unobstructed view of the incident, and the foul happened about 8 yards out from the goal. To me, it looked like a nailed-on foul, but the problem was that the fouled player made slight contact with the ball when he went down, changing the direction of the ball and making it appear as though the defending player had pulled off a sensational tackle (cue all sorts of disagreements). One player was particularly public with his disagreement, with some choice language, and as I had already spoken to him a couple of times I had no hesitation to get my yellow out and sin bin him. As usual people don't know the laws, think I've sent him off, etc. The away coach then actually came on to the pitch to confront me, and I felt physically intimidated by this (not least because that club is from a notoriously rough area). Considering this, I just moved away and ignored it, to save myself from any potential physical contact (yes, I know I should have sent him off as per the LOTG, but I don't think anyone can possibly expect someone my age to do that in that situation). Then the other end 2 mins later, a player pulls someone inside the box, again he's already been warned, so I take the opportunity for an easy yellow to try and regain full control (the coach confronting me had caused it to become a bit of a free-for-all). By this point I'm now stopping the game for every foul, not even looking for advantages for obvious reasons. At full-time the coach then continues to argue etc, and I just leave the venue because at this point I feel unsafe, and I was at risk of putting myself in danger if I tried to take any disciplinary action against him at the time. I've reported this on Wholegame, with the reasons why I didn't take disciplinary action at the time. Will the fact I didn't do anything about it there and then affect my case? Also, does anybody think I could have managed this differently? Most of the spectators thought I had a good game though, which is a bonus.
Sorry for the essay by the way!

Sorry to hear this mate. Contact the competition as well if you feel this is a safeguarding issue as you’re under 18.

Just said it in another thread - and I totally get it that in the heat of the moment etc - but, DEAL with that coach at the first opportunity next time. That was a catalyst and it spiralled out, and you’re then trying to pull it back together.

Report the facts, be honest and factual (no “I think”) and leave it all with county.

Hope you’re alright mate 👍🏻

I would suggest an extraordinary incident for the coach's actions, saying that you know it should have been a red card but his actions made you scared to issue it. Assuming you are under 18, an adult threatening a junior is a clear child protection issue and he needs to be reported.

1- Ideally you should bin the manager, but this is easier said that done for reasons you mentioned. Plus with it being youth football, there may not be someone to take their place which makes it even more difficult

2- report the facts

3- definitely a child welfare issue if you’re under 18. I actually had a similar issue when I was starting out. Think I was 15 at the time. Was abused by an away team. Turns out the chief instigator of the abuse was the club & league child welfare officer… ps- they were no longer this after the whole club tied themselves in knots at the hearing.

Thanks for all the advice guys. I put an extraordinary report into county and I’ve emailed the safeguarding officers as well to make them aware. Hopefully it will be dealt with now.

To be honest I’m really hoping there’s no need for a hearing. He’s exactly the sort of person that would wait for you!
I’ve informed the league and CFA though, so it’s up to them to decide now.

With my one, the club appealed the charge.

As I was U18, my dad was in there with me. There’s was then 2 people on charge; the manager and the welfare officer

They brought them in separately. One of them described how the first half I had been the best referee they had seen in years, but I lost control 2nd half.

The second one said how it was a bloodbath from start to finish.

The hearing didn’t last long at all. And the lady who was the welfare officer hasn’t been seen since in kids football.

Hopefully you won’t get to that stage, but who knows!

Hope you're OK, can't be any easy experience at any age.

There was something about u18s having the option of attending misconduct meetings via Zoom not sure whether it ever came to fruition.

Don’t even think or worry about a hearing. In till your told there is one. Likely you will be asked for a statement and that will be the end of it from you side. I know my CFA try to avoid u18 referees attending hearing and collect a statement instead that is read out
