You're supposed to charge for the shortest route, distance wise, even if you take a longer route (which may be more fuel efficient).As a tip: submit whatever mileage Google Maps says it is, regardless of what route you took / plan to take.
Easy to print out and prove. Had a few unecessary quibbles over the odd quid here or there over the years.
