The Ref Stop

Michael Oliver (city vs Liverpool)

SM

The avuncular one
What a flawless first half performance from mr Oliver. Calm, confident, majestic. With Howard Webb now dispatched to the refereeing farm (so to speak) this guys looks to have a shout at being top dog.

No mean feat given how well all the top flight officials have performed over the weekend.

The Ref Stop
He does stand out massively. I think he's certain to be our world cup ref in years to come. Very seamless display.

And at only 29 I think has quite a career ahead!

Then again he's not had a great deal to deal with! But was very good last weekend mind you.

Flaming commentators!!!

"Its nice to see the shoulder barge not penalised"

These guys should be forced to read the LOTG cover to cover before they even give them a microphone! A refs worst enemy!

Thought he did pretty well.

One gripe though. Why wasn't Emre Can sent off? He dived late on having already been booked and should have gone, no excuses, just poor refereeing. That kind of thing really infuriates me.

Did Oliver award the free kick for the dive?

Then obviously he didn't spot it, I think it is unfair that you call it "poor refereeing", can I ask, do you spot every single dive during your games?

He used a bit of common sense towards the end of the game. He could have booked a couple, but didn't. I call that good refereeing. The game was over by that point as a competition.

He pointed to him and told him to get up, tells me that he spotted it.

I don't claim to be perfect but the fact that he told him to get up suggests he spotted it. Regardless of the stage of the game, he should've had a second yellow. No problem with being sensible, but diving is a booking at any stage of the game.

I didn't call it poor refereeing but if you watch the game you would have seen he did spot it, just ignored it

Or micheal just didn't think it was a foul or simulation?

Judging by his body language I think he did think it was simulation, but only he knows. As I said, simulation not being appropriately punished is a real gripe for me. Of course, that depends on what you deem to be "appropriate". Ambiguity everywhere! :p
