If someone in the league is asking you to stay when you feel unsafe, find another league, I can guarantee there's someone out there who isn't going to ask you to put yourself in danger for a few bob on a sunday morning! Grab one from each team, ideally the starters, dish out the reds and if possible, move on. What I've seen when on the line for 'proper' Saturday games is that generally one red for each team tends to defuse things and we can get on with the game afterwards, but from the sounds of this you could have issued each player a red and they would have cracked on regardless!
