Level 6-5 Promotion + Fitness Test

Level 6 Referee
Hi All,

Not specifically a question from a new ref here but seemed the most suitable thread to post in. This season my refereeing 'career' has progressed the most it has done yet with me achieving Level 7-6 promotion and I've begun refereeing as an assistant on the Spartan South Midlands League.

My first question is what difference can I expect in the promotion from 6-5, compared to 7-6. Obviously, it's going to be more scrutinising but what do I specifically need to focus on.

My second question is based on the best way to prefer for a fitness test. To assist on the premier division of the Spartan League I have to run 2000m in 12 mins and 2x50 metres in 7.5 seconds. Now, 2000m is less than the necessary 2600m for 5-4 but either way, it's a distance I haven't ever trained for. I have begun daily run's and I'm within in the pace but building up stamina is a challenge. Whilst refereeing its easy to keep your mind off the pace you might need to achieve, but whilst just running its more challenging.

Any advice on either of these subjects I would greatly appreciate.

Many Thanks!

I thought the SSML fitness test required 2400m for the Cooper Test. I will do the test (if it happens) and that's what I had in mind
Having checked last year's requirement;
Makes no sense to me that the AR1 needs to do 2400m, yet AR2 can get away with 2000m.... meaning one side of the FOP gets a far inferior service

I enquired with Tony Weight, the referee liaison officer last month and he said it was 2000m. I might have to check again if this is the case.

OK, so that's 9m40s (per mile, I'm old skool) pace for 12 minutes
What are you able to achieve as of today? And will the sprints be any problem to you?

I'm managing a pace of around 6mins 20 seconds per KM, so not that far off. First KM I'm easily making it in 6 mins but it's keeping that pace. Stamina isn't there yet. Sprints should be too much of an issue, my short term speed is okay.

In very basic terms (which I recently posted in another thread); my approach is...
Running faster than you need to over distances shorter than 2km (typically any distance up to say 1.5km)
Running slower than you need to at distances over 2km (any distance you like really)
And also practising 6 minute km pace frequently, so your body and mind gets very familiar with it

seems good advice, some level 2 and 3 refs from my association have kindly said I could begin training with them from this week. I was apprehensive at first because there fitness will be well above mine but they said they would work things out to suit me.

ALWAYS take offers like this up. You will get better working with others who are where you want to be, and you’ll get motivation and accountability being a part of a group like this.

I have done so. Motivation is definitely a challenge to begin with, but as with a lot of things being in a group is more enjoyable.

It is 2400m for any level 5 who wants to referee Division 1 (step 6) middles and be senior assistant on Premier Division games (step 5). 2000m is the minimum needed to be junior assistant on Premier Division games

With the differentiation in distance between Senior and Junior not driven by the quality of officiating needed on the two sides of the pitch but by the fitness required by the Senior Assistant should he / she need to take over in the middle!

I'm confused... Are we saying that you have 2 classifications of AR? Junior and senior where it is pre defined that a junior can only be junior etc.
Just asking as haven't come across that before, for example, I have been given games where its both ARs first games on the line. And what happens if there aren't enough senior ARs to cover all the senior lines?

Generally for the games I assist on the higher level referee is senior, and of the level is the same, the referee of most experience is the senior. I was senior once this season as a level 7, when the other official was a young girl of just 16. Perfectly entitled to be an assistant on the game but more suited to junior.

SSMFL Premier games will always have a L4 in the middle and an L5 that has passed the 2400m fitness test on the line. The rationale being that if the referee goes down for any reason there is someone with a good level of fitness to take over.

Very lucky to have the available referees.
What happens if you don't? Presume just look for the next highest?

What happens if I’m the junior assistant and both go down! Am I calling that Game or are both teams obliged to provide a someone to become club appointed?

The competition rules should state.. I would guess that the two clubs would be required to agree on a suitable person to take over assistant duties.

Yeah, below National League the rules are normally that the game has to finish with the remaining officials. I finished an Isthmian Premier League (step 3) game with just one assistant after one went down and the clubs refused to agree on a replacement.
