It's archaic and really doesn't matter in today's game. Active involvement in OS used to be much more broad. The language used to be something like "seeks to gain an advantage from OSP." So once upon a time, you would see players in OSP either turn their back on the play or literally step off the field to show the referee that they were not seeking to gain an advantage. But as we have so drastically narrowed what it means to be actively involved, you will never see a player do this in modern soccer.
