team A is in the attack phase and player X is in an offside position when the ball from player Y is passed to player Z who is onside. X either runs back to an onside position or is placed onside by a defender. .Z then does a backward cross to X who scores iIs this a legal goal?.
The law just says offside is then called. but mentions nothing else about subsequent position of X nor whether tge pass to X is forwards or backwards

Welcome!
In the first phase there is no offence as player X is not actively involved.
In the second phase, player X is not further forward than the ball so is not offside.
Whether the ball is played forward or not is totally immaterial.
Hope that helps.

Sounds highly like the situation where Celtic scored their 2nd goal.
If not, have a look at that goal and you should get a good feel for this law.
