This happened today in a EFL friendly:

Keeper carries the ball out of the area (not concentrating). Referee give DFK.

Player taking it places ball on floor. He's about to kick it square to his team mate who has an empty net. This is when same keeper picks the ball up and throws it ten yards away to stop this happening.

DOGSO?

Referee spoke to the keeper and nothing else.

Was the GK offence punishable by a free kick? Or a handball offence?

If the referee has decided it is on the whistle, which he almost certainly would have for a free kick on the edge of the area, it can’t be DOGSO, at worst it is delaying the restart but even that is a stretch.

Plus no one wants red cards in friendlies, including the other team as they don’t want to play against 10. Obviously for something serious the referee has no choice, but no chance for something like this in my opinion.

First offence was handball as keeper walked 3 yards outside the area with ball in his hands. DFK.

Second offence stopped, IMHO, an easy goal into an empty net.

A keeper throwing the ball 10 yards to stop a QFK is not an easy yellow (at minimum) for DTR?

Has it delayed the restart though if it is a ceremonial free kick? The ball will be back well before the referee is ready to blow the whistle.

Why did the keeper throw the ball 10 yards? Was he helping the referee?
The last time I checked not helping the referee wasn’t a caution offence. Delaying the restart is, but it actually has to do what it says on the tin.

The three criteria we have been asked to apply when deciding on DTR are Clear, Deliberate and Impactful. It sounds like this met the first two but not the third (because, as others have said, likely the referee has decided, correctly or incorrectly that it’s on his whistle).

Take the assumption that it was a ceremonial free kick out of the equation…….
Still can't be DOGSO as not a free kick offence. But a moot point as no senior referee is allowing a free kick on the edge of the penalty area to be taken quickly, just never going to happen.

Of course they could allow a quick one. We’ve had multiple discussions around that over the years. You’ve even said yourself you would allow them if they were taken so quickly you hadn’t had a chance to get there.

Also USB (not respecting the game) or Dissent by action.

So many reasons for a yellow; friendly or not.
USB maybe, dissent, absolutely not. How could it be?

Dissent lines can blur with delaying restart if the ball is kicked away in anger at the decision, but that isn’t what’s happened here.

If they try to take it immediately referees might allow it, but realistically that doesn't sound like that was the case here.

How many EPL or EFL games can you remember where the referee has allowed a quick free kick on the edge of the penalty area? I'm really struggling to think of any.

Henry did it vs Villa. Giggs did it in a CL game.

My point is, you said no senior referee would allow it to happen, almost to stop the conversation around @Kent Ref discussion.

Of course I'm not trying to stop the conversation, perhaps I should have said it is extremely rare, which is exactly what it is. One Premier League game is something like 0.01%, which is as close to never as you are going to get.

Henry also did it vs Chelsea. Fairly infamous incident in La Liga with Real Madrid doing it as well.

It’s certainly not an everyday thing, but to say no senior referee allows it just isn’t true. But extremely rare, I’ll agree with you there.
