Hi Guys
Illustrated on attached. The ball is played through to the forward who is a yard offside (only player standing in the opposition half of the field. The ball skims of the defenders head. The ball is received by the forward who runs on score. I raise the flag as soon as the forward touches the ball.

I got pelters..... I say it's offde as the the touch was not a deliberate or stray pass just a deflection.

Technically the amount of contact the defender makes with the ball is irrelevant as to whether it would be considered a deliberate play or not, however it does sound like this would be very likely to be considered a deflection and thus still be an offside offence.

You’re spot on - well done for knowing the law as I’ve seen many make the mistake before!

Sounds like you got it right but be careful with the terminology you use. There is nothing to explain what a 'stray pass' is or how 'skimming' should impact the decision. There are only two possibilities. The defender's touch was deliberate play or it was not. There is a whole new section added to law 11 recently to explain what deliberate play is.

Amount of contact is relevant to one of the considerations in Law 12:

The player had time to coordinate their body movement, i.e. it was not a case of instinctive stretching or jumping, or a movement that achieved limited contact/control

True, but what I meant is that if someone had all the time in the world to control the ball but ultimately f*cks it up majorly fluffing it with limited contact, it doesn’t make it offside because of that

I had this very same scenario on Sunday. I was in the middle striker went through, CAR flag up me in agreement and whistle. Attacking team coach going mental and then gets his phone out to check LOTG then starts shouting it was 2nd faze. I had to go over to the bench to calm him down and explain.

Are you saying he behaved in an inappropriate manner as a result of the use of electronic or communication equipment?

Did he phone @JamesL for advice as to where in Law 11 "second phase" is mentioned? 🤔
