Level 4 Referee
Hi, does anyone have any stats or know where I can find them for the number of referees at each level (men and women)? I know in my level 4 pool there are 90 referees for instance. is that standard? How many level 3's, 2's nationally etc.? Just curious in terms of opportunities for progression. Thank you.

There's somewhere in the region of 300 referees at level 3. That doesn't account for the specialist assistant referees who may be operating on the lines at various levels.

Numbers are approx and just based on how many are in the merit list so doesn't count those on sabbatical or injured that have not yet refereed on this merit table.

I believe there is in the region of 7-800 level 4 referees nationally, although that may be totally wrong. Your pool is a regionalised group of those, however once you get to L3 there is only one pool so to speak and that has all 300 odd in it.

As a L4 you could look at your AR tab will give you a rough indication of how many L4s there are.

I asked Copilot, only to then realise that it got the answer from this very topic. And In know the levels are wrong, but that is only because the document on the FA's website is wrong 🤦‍♂️

In terms of higher level assistants, there are around 65 across the two EPL and Championship lists and around 200 on the National List who cover games across Leagues 1 & 2, National League, PL2 etc. A small minority of those on the National List are Level 3’s that also still referee.

Only just now? AI making things up when it doesn't know the answer has been a "feature" since day 1 of this generation of the tech.
For a moment I thought you were talking about IFAB's media relations officer (the one who replies to lotg questions) 🤣

AI in the format of Copilot and Chat GPT is, in admittedly simplified terms, a search engine that will retrieve and combine results from multiple locations. Rather than using Google or Bing to search and then reviewing each response you get a single response sourced from multiple sources. If any of those sources are incorrect or out of date, as was the case here with the FA's refereeing levels document, the AI response will pull that incorrect or out of date information.

I know that we are veering well off topic, but coincidentally I wrote a blog post this weekend about how I was right and ChatGPT was wrong. (Be warned, has absolutely nothing to do with refereeing, or football at all)

It may come as a surprise to some, but I'm always forever telling ChatGPT that he/she/they is wrong on a whole host of subjects
