The Ref Stop

Hammers vs Toffees

Padfoot

The Persecuted One
Just shown a replay of a challenge.....players comes from behind, wraps his leg around his opponent, clearly making contact with the player way before his dangling foot skims the ball......
Commentator says that's a good challenge........no foul given by the ref....

Whatever happened to making contact with opponent before the ball equalling a foul?

The Ref Stop
I wasn't criticising the match referee......I was just lamenting the idiocy of commentators.....

Pull the other one Pad. Commentators are the corner stone of footballing knowledge

Its getting worse. Or maybe im just noticing it more, but there doesnt seem to be a highlights show or live game go by where I dont pick up on numerous idiotic excretions of the mouth from our "professional" football pundits

this thread is beginning to sound like an MI thread

referee's bitching about commentators says more about referees than commentators, methinks :(

Why?

Commentators are well paid and get to see top football from a great vantage point.

Clive Tyldesley once said "People say to me, you have the best job in the world........and they're right!"

Given all that, its not unreasonable to expect them to know the basic of the laws of the game.

I'm not talking about the subtleties and nuances of interpretation that we discuss on here but the basic laws they should know.

This season most appalling I heard was during the West Ham v QPR game, where West Ham "goal" was disallowed because QPR free kick had not left the area when put in the goal by West Ham player. Explanations from a clearly perplexed commentator and co - commentator ranged from offside (yes honestly!) to not 10 yards back. West Ham player complained about decision as well!

Not sure how me relaying this tale reflects on me btw?!

the guy on the west ham game last night said i hate to criticise officials, blimey i wouldnt like to hear them if they enjoyed it

Erm... It was taken out of the lotg a few years back.

It is legal to contact an opponent prior to the ball as long as you do not trip/tackle/kick/etc in a careless, reckless or dangerous manner.

On the other hand, and this is the bit our beloved commentators get wrong, if you get the faintest of touches on the ball first, during or after a challenge, that doesn't mean that anything goes and any sort of challenge is OK.

Drives me mad, when TV, uses super slow motion to show that , yes the defender did brush the ball with his foot before completely wiping out the attacker so that's all fine!
