Half way line flags

Does anyone know why, unlike corner flags, half way line flags are optional? Just curious...

I'd have thought that it is because they are practically 'useless'! Corner flags allow you to clearly see if it is a throw in or a corner. Whereas I don't really think that a halfway line flag would aid the referee too much!
I might be wrong though!

lol....I can;t disagree with Charlie. All I can think of, is that they may help an official see if a player was in his own half for an offside call and the fact that some of the numpties on the bench understand where they are supposed to sub on from.

I use it as a reminder of where I left my water bottle!
