For only the second time in over 1300 matched I had to call for police assistance last night.
Two players did the head-to-head rutting stags and our problem player stupidly followed up with the head butting action. Got his red and then threatened my colleague, including lots of death threat stuff, choking action etc. And then half time trying to break into the officials’ changing room, banging, more threats.
We were quite relaxed, we are familiar with the teams. But my colleague felt threatened enough that I spoke to our FA and called the police. It’s quite common they send a van at the end of a match here. In the end, the rest of the match was fairly normal, we had an observer and long feedback session (which was great as lots of other stuff in this match), the po-po didn’t have resources to send anyone, I got a courtesy call, but there was no further incident.
Horrible for my colleague to go through such visceral threatening behaviour. Was great to have a quality debrief after with a great ref coach plus we had one of our chiefs in the crowd and he seemed happy with how we handled it. More importantly, I spent quality time with my colleague after and we had a long night of reports - great young guy with already more higher level experience than me. I think he’ll be fine. We have another one together tomorrow
